Drivers in Michigan will pay more in vehicle fees starting today.

The per vehicle fee to cover the cost of medical care for people injured in accidents jumps by $28 per car, truck or SUV.

The increase brings the vehicle fee to $220 a year.

The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association oversees the fund, which pays auto insurance companies for the cost of medical care when it goes above $580,000.

Since lawmakers approved a new no-fault auto insurance plan, the fee could drop next year, but its unclear by how much.
