WEATHER ALERT: Storm chances Monday night amidst air quality alert

The National Weather Service is forecasting severe storms to cross into west Michigan on Monday night.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, parts of west and central Michigan is in a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather. The timeline for storms is estimated between 8 p.m. Monday night and 4 a.m. Tuesday morning. Storm tracks are projected to travel from the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin to the southeast into the northern Lower Peninsula.

Damaging winds will be the primary risk with this system, but a small chance of hail and tornadoes will exist northern parts of the Lower Peninsula. Chances will be much higher in the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin before crossing Lake Michigan.

"If you are out Monday evening and vulnerable to large trees or limbs falling, pay extra close attention and have a plan to move to a sturdy shelter," NWS Grand Rapids said via X.

These storms come on the heels of recent air quality issues from the Canadian wildfires. The entire state will be in an air quality alert through Monday night, as AQI numbers will vary between 100-200 through the West Central Michigan area.
