Bill Ballenger

Bill Ballenger was the founder of Inside Michigan Politics, a state-based biweekly subscription newsletter that he launched in 1987 and published for 27 years. He was also, for six years, a horse racing columnist for The Detroit Free Press. For a dozen years (1992-2004), he hosted a weekly hour-long, call-in program on political issues on WKAR, a public radio station on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. He also was featured on The Friday Morning Podcast from 2016 to 2019, and he hosted a weekly hour-long talk show called “The Political Insider” on the Michigan Talk Network for three years, from 2018-2021.

Now that Bill is no longer associated with Inside Michigan Politics and his radio shows and podcast, he offers The Ballenger Report as something different than Inside Michigan Politics or any other news service. The Ballenger Report will offer unique articles that you will not find anywhere else. His podcast and his 165 “Political Insider” radio shows are also archived in The Ballenger Report.

“The Ballenger Report” will present what you would expect from Bill Ballenger — forecasts of national, state, and local races, including judicial contests. Ballenger was dubbed by the late Charlie Cain, onetime state capital bureau chief of The Detroit News, as “Michigan’s undisputed Crown Prince of Pundits.” He is a frequent commentator on Michigan politics and government for a broad array of newspapers and radio and television stations nationally and internationally, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Roll Call, USA TODAY, HOTLINE, the Associated Press, WJR Radio and many other stations, CNN, National Public Radio, PBS’s “The News Hour,” the BBC, and Michigan Public Television’s “Off the Record.”

Ballenger was born William S. Ballenger, III, in Flint, Michigan. He is a former state representative (1969-70) and state senator (1971-74), an ex-state racing commissioner (1982-85), and director of the state Dept. of Licensing & Regulation (1977-81). He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Health, Education & Welfare in the administration of President Gerald R. Ford (1975-76).

Ballenger holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has been a visiting adjunct professor at the University of Michigan/Flint; in both Lyman Briggs and Justin Morrill Colleges at Michigan State University; and in the Public Administration program of Western Michigan University. Rick Hughes

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Rick never knew his father. He was raised in a federal housing project by his mother and because of difficulties associated with single parenthood, Rick was placed with several guardians. Lacking self-discipline and authority orientation he was a low academic achiever in school.

In his senior year (1963-64) at Woodlawn High School, Rick set state records in track and field. He was also chosen to the high school All American Football team. Because of his size, 6? 3? and 250 pounds, and ability in football, he was offered a football scholarship to an out-of-state university. However, his SAT scores were so low that the scholarship offer was withdrawn.

In 1965, Rick took a summer job with a trucking firm as a driver and earned more money than he had ever had in his life. Consequently, he dropped out of school. This bad decision resulted in three years of frustration, anger and worry.

Rick suddenly began to feel extremely lonely. Arrogance filled him with self-pity and bitterness. He felt that people would use him and then lose him. Nothing in his life meant anything. He continually blamed others for his own mistakes and problems.

The turning point in Rick’s life came when he believed in Jesus Christ and became a Christian. That one decision transformed Rick’s life.

As Rick studied the Bible, he learned Christian principles that have helped him to make good decisions from positions of strength and to gain self-respect. When he decided to return to college, he attended Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham for two years.

Today, Rick works as an independent speaker and travels to high schools across the southeastern United States giving his Student Emphasis Week presentations. He also hosts a radio show called, "The FLOT Line," which is aired on over 75 stations across the world.

For more than 40 years Rick has been telling students that because of arrogance and lack of self-discipline, he lost his college scholarship. Rick has conducted more than 5,000 assemblies at schools that have invited him to visit and give his message.

Levin began his career as a radio host in 2002 in a Sunday afternoon timeslot on WABC. George Noory

George Noory, host of the nationally syndicated program, Coast to Coast AM, says if he weren’t a national radio talk show host he’d be in politics. Heard by millions of listeners, Coast To Coast AM airs on nearly 620 stations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Guam.

Noory captivates program listeners with his discussions of paranormal phenomena, time travel, alien abductions, conspiracies and all things curious and unexplained. He is driven, he has said, by the desire to solve the great mysteries of our time. From his first days as a radio broadcaster he says, “I’ve wanted to cover stories that the mainstream media never touch—the unusual, the paranormal and things like that. I learned that broadcast was the best business for exploring these issues, and I’ve been doing it for 33 years.”

He dates his interest in these matters to a book by Walter Sullivan, We Are Not Alone, that his mother gave him when he was 13. He was hooked.

Noory released his first book in 2006. "Worker In The Light: Unlock Your Five Senses And Liberate Your Limitless Potential," co-written by best-selling author William J. Birnes, is Noory’s revolutionary guide to spiritual enlightenment, human empowerment, ultimate productivity and absolute happiness. Noory and Birnes co-authored a follow up in 2009 entitled Journey to the Light, in which they present amazing first-hand accounts of how ordinary people changed their own lives, transcended their doubts and fears, and unlocked the secrets to their spiritual growth. In October 2011, Noory released his third book, Talking To The Dead. Co-written by Rosemary Ellen Guiley, a leading expert on the paranormal and supernatural, the book explores the colorful history and personalities behind spirit communications, weaving together spirituality, metaphysics, science and technology. Noory, along with Richard Belzer and David Wayne, released "Someone is Hiding Something: What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?" in February 2015. Scrutinizing the theories the media and politicians claim are the "most likely" reasons the plane crashed, they argue that if a year after a huge Boeing 777 has gone missing, and there’s still no sign of it whatsoever, it’s time to think outside the box.

In December 2012, GAIAM TV launched "Beyond Belief with George Noory," a new TV show exploring the unknown and mysteries of the universe. The one-hour, weekly series features Noory’s informative, investigative and dynamic conversations, as well as some of his favorite guests from the radio program. Taped at GAIAM studios in Boulder, Colo., Beyond Belief with George Noory is available exclusively at beyondbelief.com. Noory has also appeared on the History Channel's Ancient Aliens, SYFY, The Larry King Show and numerous others.

He was born, raised and educated in Detroit. He has three children and six grandchildren. He served nine years in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Michael Patrick Shiels

Michael Patrick Shiels’ personality-based, news making show called "Michigan's Big Show" covers state, national and international politics in a non-partisan manner. Michael Patrick skillfully mixes politics, which he affectionately refers to “as the family business” with news, business, sports and lifestyle topics you’re interested in, keeping listeners informed as well as entertained.

His inquisitive personality leads to asking newsmakers relevant questions – pointed, but with respect – and recognizes that listening is the most important quality of a good interviewer. “Everyone’s an expert at or on something,” explains Michael Patrick, who uses humor and surprises to draw out quality answers and important information. “Every person has a story, and my job is to get guests to the point, while allowing them to express themselves in a genuine manner, in authentic conversation.

Shiels has been named “Network Radio Personality of the Year” by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters on multiple occasions including in 2018. Shiels began his broadcasting career as the producer for legendary Detroit radio host, J.P. McCarthy, and has also worked with Dick Purtan, who, like McCarthy, is in the Radio Hall of Fame. Shiels has authored nine books, including collaborations with Larry King, Arthur Hills, and Ben Wright.

In addition, Shiels’ travel articles have appeared in publications including The Los Angeles Times, Cigar Aficionado, Travel + Leisure, Bermuda Royal Gazette, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Automotive News, Traverse Magazine, Traverse City Record-Eagle, Booth Newspapers, The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, Heritage Newspapers, Sports Illustrated, Golf Magazine, and more. He has visited more than 35 countries, been on staff at the PGA Tour, and provided advance work for two Presidential campaigns so far.

Listen to the show on-demand via your favorite podcast platforms, including Spreaker, iTunes, iHeart Radio, Spotify, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Brandon Wirth

Brandon Wirth is the host of Big Rapids Media Network's "The Rundown" and "Behind the Bulldogs."

"The Rundown," is a high school sports show covering the Central State Activities Association. It includes sport-specific score reports, recaps, and interviews with coach and players of all 11 teams. He is described as thorough but optimistic on the area's sports and various debate topics within the state's future outlook.

"Behind the Bulldogs" is a Ferris State sports program that Wirth co-hosts with Ferris State Volleyball player Tatum Outlaw. The show dives into game recaps, season analysis, and in-depth interviews with players, coaches, and support staff with the Bulldogs.

Wirth was the former host of "The West Michigan Sports Show," a casual sports talk show on local high school sports analysis and insight. The show was discontinued at the end of 2024, replaced by "The Rundown" in the same Saturday afternoon time slot.

Within the network, Wirth also hosts "The Afternoon Ride with Brandon" on weekdays from 3 PM to 7 PM on sister-station Big Country 100.9, jockeying the latest country tunes and news, covering local events and interviews, and adding comedic entertainment.

The Reed City native started with the network as an intern in 2022, now serving as the news and sports director within the Big Rapids Media Network. He also serves as an Athletics Communications Assistant with Ferris State University in their athletic department.

For three seasons, Wirth served as the play-by-play voice of Big Rapids Cardinal Basketball on WBRN. He currently broadcasts play-by-play for his alma mater, Reed City High School, on Y102 for football and basketball.

Wirth has a master's degree in Business Administration and bachelor's of arts degree in Sports Communication. During his time at Ferris State, he competed on the Bulldog Cross Country and Track & Field teams. He currently ranks as a top-15 competitor in school history, including #4 all-time in the 3000m steeplechase event, and has earned two GLIAC Commissioner's Awards and Runner of the Week honors.

In high school, Wirth was an all-state honoree in cross country as well as an all-conference recipient in baseball, soccer, and basketball at Reed City High School.
