Additional security measures being taken at CMU to make campus safer for students

Extra security measures are going in buildings at Central Michigan University this summer.

 

Mechanical and electronic door locks are being added in classrooms and auditoriums campus-wide.

 

The locks will allow rooms to be locked from inside.

 

In addition, access to residential areas will be limited to those living in each residence hall starting in the Fall.

 

Some of the security updates started two years ago. Police say the work will increase layers of protection for students.

 

Details of building security will be part of students' move-in information.

 

The latest security measures come months after James Davis Jr. was arrested for shooting and killing his parents in his dorm room at Campbell Hall.

 

Vestaburg woman injured following car accident in Mecosta County

A Vestaburg woman was sent to the hospital after a one vehicle accident left her car in a swamp.

 

It happened in Mecosta County's Millbrook Township on  Jackson Rd near 35th Ave.

 

Police say a 47-year old Vestaburg woman was traveling westbound on Jackson Rd when she lost control of her vehicle, left the road and went into a swamp. 

 

She was taken to Spectrum Health Hospital in Lakeview for non-life threatening injuries.

 

Evart area man critically injured following car accident in Osceola County

A 32-year old Evart man is in critical condition following a car accident in Osceola County's LeRoy Township.

 

Deputies say they were called to a car accident on 14 Mile Rd near 190th Ave.

 

The driver, a 35-year old man from the Evart area suffered minor injuries and was arrested for drunk driving. The passenger, a 32-year old Evart area man, was flown from the scene by Areomed; he is listed in critical condition.

 

The investigation is still ongoing; however alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.

 

Former Mayor of Cadillac throws name into the republican primary race for 102nd seat in State House

Former Cadillac Mayor William Barnett will be challenging incumbent Michele Hoitenga in the republican primary for the 102nd State House district seat in August.

 

Barnett announced his candidacy Thursday.

 

In addition, Barnett also announced former State House Representative Phil Potvin (2011-2016) will be running his campaign.

 

Meanwhile, the democratic primary race on August 7th will feature candidates, Dion Adams of Big Rapids and Bruce L. Reges of Stanwood.

 

Osceola County Sheriff Deputies investigating two car accident in LeRoy Township

Police in Osceola County believe alcohol is a factor in a two vehicle crash last night on Mackinaw Trail and 18 Mile Rd in LeRoy Township.

 

Deputies say a 60-year old woman from the LeRoy area was flown by Aeromed, her condition is unknown at this time while the other driver involved a 59-year old man from the Big Rapids area was treated and released at the scene.

 

The crash investigation is still ongoing.

 

Law enforcement begins "click it or ticket" campaign

The "Click it or Ticket" campaign has resumed for the Memorial Day holiday period.

 

Police departments, sheriff's offices and the Michigan State Police will all participate through June 3 in an attempt to reduce serious injuries and deaths on the roads by observing that motorists are using their seat belts.

 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association said more than half of young adults 18 to 34 that were killed in crashes in 2016 were unrestrained.

 

During the Memorial Day holiday period in 2017, 10 people died in traffic crashes in the state of Michigan.

 

 

Stanwood woman injured following car accident

A Stanwood woman was sent to the hospital Monday following a car accident in Mecosta County.

 

It happened on Northland Drive near Lincoln Road.

 

Deputies say a 62-year old Stanwood woman was traveling southbound on Northland Drive when she was waiting to make a left turn onto Lincoln Road.

 

A passenger car passed on the right side of the road causing a truck driven by a 48 -year old Blanchard man to lock up the brakes on the wet pavement and rear end the car.

 

The woman was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

 

Evart man dies after being hit by two cars in Kent County

A 22-year old Evart man was killed over the weekend after he was struck by to vehicles in Kent County.

 

Nicholas Martin was walking along an unlit area of Lincoln Lake Road when he was struck by a southbound vehicle at about 10 p.m. Saturday.

 

According to Kent County Sheriff's Deputies, a 17-year-old from Greenville traveling southbound in a 2003 Chevy Cavalier struck Martin.

 

A second vehicle was witnessed hitting Martin and failed to stop following the crash.

 

The accident is still under investigation. 

Police chase in Mecosta County ends with one suspect arrested and another in the hospital

A police chase in Mecosta County over the weekend ended when a passenger in the suspects vehicle jumped out and injured themselves.

 

It happened Saturday night in Morley on 3 Mile Road near 145th Street.

 

Deputies say when they tried to arrest the driver, a 21-year old man, he resisted and fled in his vehicle.

 

During the chase, a passenger of the fleeing vehicle jumped out the window, the vehicle ran off the road and crashed about a half mile away from the initial traffic stop location.

 

The driver fled on foot and was later located and arrested on several charges, the passenger was taken to Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

 

 

 

Burton man injured in Osceola County rollover accident

A Burton man was flown by areomed to a Grand Rapids area hospital for treatment following a vehicle accident in Osceola County.

 

It happened on M-115 near 100th Ave in Highland Twp, that's where deputies were called to a rollover accident.

 

An Investigation into the accident scene determined that the driver was southeast bound on M-115 in a pick-up when he left the roadway and rolled his vehicle.

 

The 23-year old Burton man's condition is unknown at this time.

 

Speed is believed to be a factor.

 

Two critically injured following two car accident in Newaygo Co.

Three people were injured, two critically, after a rollover crash in west Michigan Sunday afternoon.

 

It happened in Ensley Township in Newaygo County when state police say the driver of a Jeep didn't stop at a stop sign and hit a pickup truck, causing it to roll over.

 

Both drivers were critically injured. One was thrown from their vehicle.

 

State Senate Republicans looking to legalize marijuana

Michigan voters may not get a chance to vote on legalizing pot if the top Senate Republican at the state Capitol has his way.

 

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof is drafting a plan in which lawmakers would approve the legalization of marijuana, thus preventing it from going on the November ballot.

 

Then lawmakers would amend the law to include a rollback of the state income tax rate to 3.9%.

 

Meekhof is expected to brief his Senate colleagues behind closed doors today.

 

Even if the Senate approves, the proposal would still need state House approval.

 

Political experts say having the marijuana proposal on the ballot would bring more democratic voters to the polls.

 

Rockford woman rolls vehicle while looking for cell phone

A Rockford woman got into a car accident after looking for her phone while driving in Mecosta County.

 

Sheriff Deputies say the 21-year old driver was traveling northbound on US-131 near 13 Mile Rd.

 

While looking at her phone, she swerved off the road into the median, lost control and rolled.

 

The Rockford woman was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

 

Farmington Hills man accused of second sexual assault case in Mecosta Co.

A second victim has come forward accusing a Farmington Hills man of sexual assault while he was the manager of Tullymore Resort in 2016.

 

34-year old Daniel Carlson was arraigned on a number of new charges including, first and third degree criminal sexual conduct and sexual assault of an incapacitated victim.

 

The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred in March of 2016 at the Tullymore Resort.

 

Carleson posted $125,000 bond and is currently awaiting trial on felony charges from a October 2016 assault that allegedly occurred at the Tullymore Resort as well.


 

 

BRPS & MSCS millage renewals approved; separate bond proposal approved for BRPS

Voters in the Big Rapids Public and Morley-Stanwood Community School Districts passed its proposed annual operating millage renewals during Tuesday's election.

 

However, it was a new bond proposal by BRPS that had everyone talking in recent weeks.

 

Voters approved the 2.35 mill bond proposal by only 68 votes; 1,313-1,245.

 

With the approval by voters, $2.35 cents for every $1,000 of taxable value will be levied per year in order to pay for renovations/upgrades to current buildings and athletic facilities as well as upgrading technology in the BRPS district.

 

Marlette woman injured in Mecosta County car accident

A 19-year old Marlette woman was injured after a rollover accident in Mecosta County's Fork Township.

 

Deputies say the 19-year old woman was driving westbound on 20 Mile Rd east of 10th Ave when she swerved to avoid striking a deer which caused her to lose control of her vehicle and roll.

 

She was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

 

Weidman man dies after Isabella Co. motorcycle accident

A Weidman man is dead following a motorcycle accident Tuesday.

 

It happened in Isabella County's Coldwater Township on North Brinton Rd at North County Line.

 

Michigan State Police say a preliminary investigation determined a motorcycle ran off the road and a 59-year old Weidman man died as a result of this crash.

 

The crash is still under investigation.

 

Newaygo Co. Firefighters to determine how wildfire started Tuesday

Fire investigators will go back to the scene of a wildfire that took place in Newaygo County Tuesday evening to figure out how it started.   

 

Officials say Cooler temperatures and less wind helped the flames die down on the west side of Bills Lake near M-82 but 105 acres still burned.

 

Two homes in the area were evacuated on the south side of M-82, and 15 structures were threatened, but none were lost to the fire.

 

No injuries were reported.
