Police in Mecosta Co. arrest three men connected to counterfeit money ring

Officials at the Mecosta County Sheriffs Office announced the arrest of three suspects they believe were involved in the spread of counterfeit money at local businesses.

 

Detective Casey Nemeth of the Sheriffs Office says three Chicago men ages 27, 24 and 19 were arrested Saturday for passing counterfeit money in the City of Big Rapids and Big Rapids Township.

 

The three started purchasing items at Jimmy John's and Shell Gas Station, traveled to Bob Evans, Wesco Gas and Dunhams Sports all purchasing and attempting to purchase small items with counterfeit one hundred dollar bills, and receiving the large amount in change.

 

Several counterfeit $100 bills and over $1500 of real currency were confiscated from the three men and their vehicle.

 

All three men are were arrested and lodged for the Felony charges at the Mecosta County Jail by Deputies and officers from the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety.

Investigation into recent counterfeit bills being passed in the Big Rapids Area links these subjects to multiple counterfeit money offenses in Western Michigan.  The investigation is ongoing and Detectives from both the Sheriff's Office and Big Rapids DPS are currently working with Agents from U.S. Secret Service.

 

Man injures self during target practice in Osceola County

Deputies in Osceola County are investigating a case where a man was injured while conducting target practice with his handgun.

 

Police say they were dispatched to a home Saturday afternoon in Lincoln Township.

 

A 40-year old man was said to have sustained severe injuries while involved in target practice with a hand gun.

 

The man was flown by helicopter for further medical treatment.

 

This incident remains under investigation.

Lake Isabella man accused of attempted murder

A 60-year old Lake Isabella man is in police custody on attempted murder charges following an alleged domestic incident with his girlfriend.

 

The incident happened around 2:30am last Friday, Deputies were called to a home after the 47-year old victim said the suspect, Larry Reeve threatened to kill her several times throughout this incident.

 

She said they started fighting while lying in bed and Reeve would not let her use her phone.

 

The victim said she was thrown around the bedroom by Reeve. Reeve then took his belt and wrapped it around the victim’s neck and dragged her around the house, as told by the victim. She said she could not breathe while this happened.

 

The victim then said Reeve brandished a knife and held it to her throat.

 

She said Reeve slammed her head into the floor several times. The victim said she was able to get inside the bathroom, but Reeve made his way in the room and held her head underwater in a full bathtub. She told deputies that she had to hold her breath.

 

Afterward, the victim said she was dragged outside where Reeve put her head on some cement steps and began putting pressure on her neck.

 

Her phone started ringing and Reeve answered, the victim said. Reeve spoke with the person on the phone and eventually calmed down, the sheriff’s office said.

 

The victim told Reeve to leave to her home and he did so.

 

Deputies later located Reeve and arrested him.

 

He’s been charged with attempted murder.

 

The victim was taken to a local hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.

 

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident.

Evart woman involved in rollover accident in Mecosta Co.

An Evart woman is recovering following a rollover accident this morning in Mecosta County.

 

It happened on the southbound lane of US-131 near 8 Mile Road, deputies say the 38-year old driver lost control on the icy overpass.

 

Her vehicle left the roadway and overturned in the ditch.

 

She was taken Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Stanwood man pleads 'No Contest' to second degree murder

A Stanwood man who was alleged to have shot and killed a Morley man back in October near the Moe-Z-Inn has agreed to a plea deal before his scheduled trial.

 

49-year old Randall Robert Jensen pleaded 'No Contest' to three felonies charges Tuesday, according to court records.

 

Jensen pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and one count of felony firearms, for possessing a pistol while committing a felony. According to the plea agreement, the open murder charge, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and three counts of felony firearms will be dismissed.

 

Jensen had been charged with several charges, including open murder, stemming from the Oct. 20, 2018, shooting death of 47-year-old John Mast.

 

Jensen faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced in May.

Stabbing incident in Isabella Co. leaves one man with serious injuries

One man suffered serious injuries following a stabbing incident over the weekend in Isabella County.

 

Deputies say they responded to a call about a man with a gun in a parking lot.

 

When officers arrived and investigated they found no one with a gun.

 

A short time later police received a call about a 21-year old man who had been stabbed at an apartment attached to the parking lot.

 

Deputies found several people in the apartment.

 

They were told that a few people left the party and came back with several more people.

 

That group then started spray people at the party with pepper spray and hitting them with baseball bats. The sheriff’s office said several people were punched and kicked during the attack. The suspects left the scene before deputies and officers arrived. The victims sustained minor injuries or did not need medical attention.

 

A 21-year-old man from Union Township was stabbed and struck in the face with a baseball bat.

 

He was taken to a local hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

 

Deputies are urging anyone with information on this incident to call them at (989) 772-5911.

Rollover accident sends one woman to hospital in Mecosta Co.

A Canadian Lakes woman is in stable condition following a rollover accident in Martiny Township this morning.

 

It happened just before 2am, deputies say the 56-year old woman ran off the road at the intersection of Cleveland and 80th Avenue then struck an embankment and a road sign then getting back on the road overturning several times.

 

The driver was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital for her injuries.

 

Alcohol is believed to be a factor, according to police.

Phishing scam targeting FSU students

 

The Ferris State University Dept. of Public Safety says they've received multiple reports of phishing text messages that are being sent to Students phones around campus.

 

Officials say not to respond to the text message as Ferris State University will not ask you to update login information via text.

 

DPS officials want anyone who has been targeted to take a screenshot of the message and report it to the Ferris State University I.T. Solution Center via email at ITSC@ferris.edu.

Firefighters deem farm house fire in Sheridan Township suspicious

 

Mecosta County Sheriff Deputies are continuing to investigate a fire they are calling suspicious.

 

It happened on Monday around 6:30pm at a vacant farm home in Sheridan Township.

 

Members of the Barryton Fire Department called in Police after deeming the cause of the fire suspicious.

 

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is also asking the public for assistance if anyone saw anything suspicious to please call the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office at 231-592-0150.

 

Police believe alcohol a factor in one car accident in Big Rapids Township

Police believe alcohol was a factor in a one car accident this morning in Mecosta County.

 

The accident occurred on 220th Ave north of Perry Ave.

 

Deputies say a 54-year old Sydney man lost control of his vehicle and hit the embankment at the entrance of Michigan Pain Consultants. It is believed that the accident occurred due to prior damage on the vehicle that happened during a previous accident that the driver fled from.

 

The driver was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids for non life threatening injuries.

 

Search resumes for Evart teen who fell through the Muskegon River ice in February

The search has resumed for a 15-year-old boy who fell through the ice of the Muskegon River two months ago.

 

Authorities in Osceola County say it's a tall task and they worked into the evening on Monday but had no success in finding the body of Dylan Shaw of Evart.

 

Shaw fell into the river with two other teens on February 7.

 

The other two were able to make it to shore.

 

Authorities will continue searching for Shaw as the weather gets warmer over the next two weeks. 

Weidman man federally indicted on child porn charges

A 68-year old Isabella County man is charged with multiple sex crimes involving children.

 

Michigan State Police announced the arrest of Weidman resident Donald Koontz, after an investigation which began in January, 2018 regarding allegations of possession of child pornography and criminal sexual conduct with children.

 

Further investigation led to Koontz being federally indicted for the sexual exploitation of children, and for possessing child pornography.

 

Koontz was arraigned on the charges in federal court in Bay City, on Friday.

Boyne City woman involved in car accident in Mecosta Co.

A Northern Michigan woman was taken to the hospital over the weekend following a single vehicle crash in Mecosta County.

 

Sheriff Deputies say it happened Saturday on US 131 SB near 21 Mile Rd in Green Township, that's where a Boyne City woman may have suffered from a medical condition.

 

The vehicle left the road and struck some trees.

 

The driver was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
