Three Clare Co. Deputies put on paid administrative leave following suspect shooting

Three Clare County Sheriff Deputies have been put on paid administration leave following the shooting death of a Harrison man.

 

Michigan State Police say deputies were called to a home in Lincoln Township last week for a felonious assault in progress.

 

Once deputies arrived on scene they were involved in a shooting.

 

42-year old Robert William Reid, was pronounced deceased on scene.

 

Preliminary autopsy results show Reid’s cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds.

 

An investigation is being conducted by the MSP.

Mecosta Co. Sheriff's Office investigating suspicious fire in Barryton

The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office is investigating what it calls a “suspicious fire” at a residence in Barryton.

 

It happened early Thursday morning just after 3am.

 

According to investigators, when firefighters arrived to the scene the trailer and a vehicle were fully engulfed in flames.

 

No one was at the home at the time and no injuries were reported.

 

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area during the time of the fire to contact them at (231) 592-0150.

State Fire Marshall offers safety tips for those celebrating Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for friends and family but it's also the number one day for kitchen fires in the state of Michigan.

 

Consumers who use portable deep fryers to cook turkeys should know the dangers involved and consider an oil-less fryer which is a safer alternative to cook their turkey.

 

State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer says that if you are going to use an oil fryer, do NOT use it in a garage, on or under a deck, breezeway, porch or inside any structure.

 

Sehlmeyer also warns folks to pay attention to their stove.

 

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires in the U.S., especially on Thanksgiving.

State Police investigate death of Newaygo County woman

State Police are investigating the death of a Newaygo Co. woman.

 

According to authorities, police were sent to a home of a 77-year old Big Prairie Township woman Tuesday around 7pm.

 

When officers arrived they found the woman unresponsive and had been bitten by a family dog.

 

EMS performed life saving measures on Sharon Lee Daniels but were unsuccessful, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

An initial investigation determined Daniels was home alone with three family dogs when one of the dogs bit her.

 

Daniels is disabled and wheelchair bound. Troopers continue to investigate.

A.O. Smith recalls Ultra Low NOx model water heaters due to fire hazard

A.O. Smith is recalling water heaters due to potential fire hazard.

 

According to the recall notice, the gas burner screen on the Ultra-Low NOx models develop tears, which can cause too much heat and possibly a fire.

 

It includes 30, 40, 50 gallons natural or propane gas-fired water heaters.

 

A.O Smith says the affected models have the first four digit serial number between 1115 and 1631.

 

They were also sold under several brand names, including ones like Kenmore and Whirlpool.

 

If this affects your machine, turn it off and contact A.O. Smith to see if a free repair is necessary.

 

So far the company has received six reports of fires.

FFA and Ferris State Administration agree to 5-year contract

After months of negotations, the Ferris State University Administration and the Ferris Faculty Association came to an agreement on a new five year contract affecting 450 tenured employees. 

 

The highlights of the contract agreement include an overall 2 percent annual salary increase in years one through three, and a 2.25 percent annual salary increase in years four and five. Also included is $300,000 annually for supplemental market adjustments.

 

The FFA voted on the new deal last week, while the Ferris Board of Trustees approved it Tuesday.

 

The new contract runs through June of 2023.

State and Local election results

Last night's election winners included Democrat Gretchen Whitmer -- who will be the state's next Governor after beating Republican Bill Schuette.

 

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow winning her re-election race against Republican challenger John James.

 

The Congressional winners include Bill Huizenga in the 2nd District, Justin Amash in the 3rd District, John Moolenaar in the 4th District, Dan Kildee relected in the 5th District, Tim Walberg in the 7th District, Paul Mitchell in the 10th District, and Rashida Talib in the 13th district.

 

Governor Rick Snyder is weighing in, following the election of Gretchen Whitmer as governor. Snyder says -quote- “Michigan’s future has never been brighter. We have the momentum to continue on this path forward to make our state an even better place to live, work, and play for generations to come. He then touted some of his achievements while in office.

 

In local election news, voters in Mecosta County's fifth district re-elected Tom O'Neil. He beat out challenger Michael Roberts.

 

The sixth district represenative race was a little bit more contested but challenger Wendy Nystrom beat incumbent Mark Solis 625-482 votes.

 

Steven Mortenson and Stacy Dennis were elected to the Barryton trustees board.

 

Michele Rassmusen and David H. Murray were elected to the Big Rapids School Board.

 

Morton Township voters said “NO” to a millage proposal that would levy .50 cents for every $1,000 of taxable value for the operation of a youth center.

 

All three of the statewide proposals in Michigan were approved.

 

Once the state board of canvassers certifies the election, people will be able to smoke and grow marijuana in their homes.

 

Proposal 1 was approved by a wide margin.

 

Proposals two and three were also approved.

 

A commission will be set up to re-draw state legislative and congressional district lines and voting may be easier in future elections.


 

 

Number of proposals and races to be decided in today's election

Three major proposals on the Michigan ballot this election day.

 

Proposal one would allow individuals 21 and older to purchase, possess and use marijuana for personal consumption.

 

Proposal two would make a constitutional amendment to establish a commission of citizens with exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representations and U.S. Congress, every 10 years, rather than being drawn by the party in power.

 

Proposal three authorizes automatic and Election Day voter registration, no-reason absentee voting, and straight ticket voting.

 

In local elections, to represent the fifth district as a Mecosta County commissioner, incumbent Tom O'Neil will take on challenger Michael Roberts, for the sixth district representative incumbent Mark Solis takes on Wendy Nystrom.

 

Voters in Morton Township to be asked to approve a new millage that would levy .50 per $1,000 of taxable value for a youth center. 

 

Luke Brown , David Murray and Michele Rasmussen are battling it out for two seats on the Big Rapids Schools Board of Education.

State officials offer safety tips for Winter Hazards Awareness Week

It's only November 5th, but state officials want you to be prepared for winter.

 

This is Winter Hazards Awareness Week.

 

The Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security says taking a few extra steps now will ensure that you and your family are ready before winter weather strikes.

 

Some tips for preparing your home for winter include insulating water lines that run along exterior walls so they don't freeze, cleaning your fireplace and chimney and cleaning gutters to prevent ice dams from forming.

 

For your car, you are encouraged to have your brakes and car battery checked and have an emergency preparedness kit with blankets, a shovel, flashlight and first aid kit.

Lakeview man OK after submerging vehicle in Mecosta Co. pond

A 21-year old man from Lakeview is OK after falling asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle and submerging it in a pond here in Mecosta County.

 

It happened on 85th Ave. near Eisenhower Rd, in Hinton Twp.

 

Deputies say the Lakeview man fell asleep, ran off the road to the left striking two mailboxes, power pole guide wire and a fence continuing into a pond submerging the vehicle completely. 

 

The driver had reported no injuries and refused medical treatment.

CMU shooting suspect deemed competent to stand trial

He's been found competent to stand trial -- now a college student will face charges for shooting and killing his parents in a dorm room.

 

No trial date has been set for 19-year old James Davis, Jr., who allegedly murdered his parents on the campus of Central Michigan University on March 2.

 

Davis is charged with two counts of open murder and was captured following a 16 hour manhunt.

Montcalm Co boy dies after falling off trailer

A Montcalm County boy is dead after falling from a trailer and being hit by its wheels while trick-or-treating last night.

 

Michigan State Police say a group of kids were being taken around Sheridan by a tractor that was pulling an aluminum trailer and the ten year-old boy fell from it and was run over by its wheels.

 

He was taken to the hospital, but did not make it.
