Lawrence John McNeil, 80 of Big Rapids

Remembering Lawrence John McNeil, a proud U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, 1944-2024.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lawrence John McNeil, a man whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering love touched the lives of all who knew him. Larry, 80, of Big Rapids, passed away on November 07, 2024. Larry was a rare soul, whose warmth radiated wherever he went. He had a way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether you were a close family member, a customer at the barbershop, or a random stranger, Larry always offered a smile, a one-liner, a kind word, or a helping hand. His selflessness was unmatched-he gave without expectation and loved without limits. His generosity knew no bounds, often sharing his time, his resources, and his heart with anyone in need.

Born in Traverse City on September 26, 1944, Larry was the son of James and Alice McNeil, who instilled in him the importance of kindness, humility, and community. He was known for his infectious laughter and his ability to make even the hardest of days feel lighter. He spent much of his life enjoying the outdoors hunting and fishing, cutting hair, owning Dan’s barbershop, but mostly being the absolute best husband, father and grandfather. His belief in the goodness of people and his commitment to making the world a better place were at the core of everything he did. Larry’s family was the center of his world. His legacy is one of love, grace, and compassion—a reminder that a life, lived with purpose, can make an everlasting impact on the world. Though his physical presence may no longer be with us, Larry’s spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched. His kindness was his greatest gift, and in remembering him, we are reminded to carry that same light forward.

It turned very lucrative, and he earned enough to buy himself a 1954 Corvette and with some money left over Chuck realized his passions in life; everything automobile, making money and being thrifty. That is what Chuck absolutely shined at, making it happen, working a plan and having a full life. Chuck was a family man, adventuring with his wife and children and then his grandchildren. Sailing on the Great Lakes, hiking in the California Hills or exploring deserts all around the world he lived fully every day, working hard, appreciating life and all its wonders .

He eventually struck off on his own, in California, with Prototype Concepts a design and prototype manufacturing company which he helped build over 15 years and was successful. Before retirement he was able to realize a dream and travel overseas to work for Ford Otosan in Istanbul, Turkey. Chuck and Connie lived overseas for 4 years and were able to travel all over Europe and experience new cultures. After all of that, they were finally able to retire, enjoying their next 20 years spending the summers in their cottage, located in the woods on the 13th hole of the Royal Golf Course in Canadian lakes, Michigan and then winters in lovely Lake Worth Florida.
