Patricia "Pat" Alice Reed, 74

Patricia “Pat” Alice Reed passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Thursday evening, March 12, 2026, at the age of 74.

The words kind, loving and accepting are an understatement when describing Pat. She was always there to take a call, or stop to chat, and talk to you like an old friend, regardless of how long it’d been since you last spoke to her.

Pat always admitted that she was not the most outgoing person, but whenever there was a gathering, she’d be off to the side holding court with a group of people, regardless if she knew them or not. She would ask how your day was, and how life was going for you. A humble soul, Pat never led with her day, but if you asked how she was doing, be ready, you were in for the long haul.

She would always have advice, even if you weren’t exactly asking for it. Pat would harken to back to her own experience to help steer you in the right direction. Even if you made a mistake, Pat, one of the most understanding people you’d ever meet, would be there to comfort you, and help you get back on your feet.

Born and raised in West Michigan, a graduate of Godwin Heights and Grand Valley State University, Pat was one of the biggest sports fans you’ll find. Whether it be her local favorites – the Wolverines, the Tigers, the Red Wings, the Pistons or Lions – or whatever star athlete was on that night, she’d always be watching. She’d somehow always be able to give better analysis than the pundits on television.

Pat married her late husband, Cliff, in May 1981. Along with being longtime season-ticket holders of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the two were big fans of boating and being by the water. They bought property in Stanwood, just south of Big Rapids, right along the Muskegon River. “Up North” became a destination for friends and family. The couple opened their door and fired up the boat for their loved ones. At days end, Pat would be there at the dinner table, asking how the water was, telling her stories of her own experience on the river.

Few people like Pat have come and gone from this Earth. Someone who experienced so much, but remained as grounded. She was always there for the big events, supporting her loved ones in their endeavors. Weddings, sporting events, celebrations, she would do what she could to make sure you felt seen, and important. She’d tell you how great it was to see you, even if it was just for a few minutes, give you a pat on the back (full pun intended), maybe slip you a $10 bill, and send you on your way. That’s just who Pat was, and how we’ll always remember her.

Pat will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Catherine Tassell and Mike Goretzka; nephews, Jonathan (Colleen) and James (Kris); great-nieces and nephews, Tyler (Kelly), Connie, Jacob, Alex (Bethany), Brianna, Avery, Megan, and Daniel; great-great-nephew, Felix; step-children, Alice (Daniel) Rhodes and Mont (Nina) Reed; grandchildren: Daniel (Cynthia), London, Nora (Zac), and Brickner; and great-great-grandchildren: Duke, Elle, Joshua (Jackie), Kashton, Kohen, Knox, Klaire, and Brad (Lindsey).

Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cliff Reed; her parents; her sister, Sylvia (Al) Bristol; and her brother-in-law, Alfred (Margaret) Reed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Pat may be made to Meals on Wheels or Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. Her family is grateful for their compassionate care during her final days. Glunt on May 30, 1964 in Livonia, where they made their home and raised their three children, Cheryl, Scott and Christopher.

Pat was a licensed beautician and hairdresser in the Livonia area for a number of years. Her easy going demeanor combined with a quick to smile & laugh approach led to the development of a clientele that would come to the house. When the children were older her interest in food service began as the head chef for Canteen, a commercial catering company. After moving to their home on the mighty Muskegon in 1997, the catering experience gave her the knowledge and skills needed to manage the Evart meal site for the Osceola County Commission on Aging. Work was not work for Pat - it was second nature. She was grateful to help the elderly, make friends along the way and considered herself lucky to have her husband as a delivery driver.

As a family they enjoyed numerous camping trips up and down the Lake Michigan coastline before buying a motorhome. After that they went anywhere. Jim was a family man through and through. He taught them the value in hard work, how to be resourceful and that dedication pays off. There wasn't anything that he wouldn't  give them within reason. In later years, Jim and Barb looked forward to wintering in Florida and worked hard to make a good life for each other and their family. They were seldom seen without each other and simply put, just loved.

She was born in Onondaga, Michigan in 1934 to Burton and Erma (Bush) Baldwin.  Most would say that she was a go-getter from an early age.  She was always involved in school activities and loved to be around people.  No surprise to anyone who knew her, she was described as outgoing and popular.  Charlene met Dale Nowlin at 13 years old, and married him when she was 17.  They welcomed four beautiful children over the years; Linda, Sandy, Randy, and Diane who meant the world to them.  They changed addresses often, but Char’s knack of being able to connect with others meant that they formed lasting relationships wherever they landed.  As the children grew up and moved on, Dale and Charlene found themselves managing apartment complexes.  She loved the work as well as the people.

She and Dale loved to travel.  Upon retirement, they moved to the Smoky Mountains where she soon became involved in a local theater as an usher.  She thrived in that job as she loved connecting with people and helping others.  After Dale’s passing in 2001, Charlene moved back to Michigan.  She couldn’t wait to become part of the community. Over the last 25 years she made many friends here who became more like family.  She loved her friends from Bernie’s, Three Girls, the Fairman-Nesbitt apartments, and the Downtown Business committees she served on dearly.  She described Big Rapids as the place that felt most like home.

Charlene was warm and welcoming.  She had a gift for making others feel included and for connecting with people.  She was happiest when surrounded by friends and having a visit.  Charlene had a profound love of sports and books and having fun.  She was also incredibly resilient.  No matter what challenges life threw at her – and there were plenty – she persevered.  She is remembered by her loving family of Linda and David May and Sandy and Tim Theunick, 10 grandchildren, 30 great grand-children, and 4 great-great grandchildren, as well as a lifetime of friends.
