Betty Lorraine Stilson, 88

Betty Lorraine Stilson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on July 12, 2025. She was born December 1, 1936, the youngest child to Alpha Sr. and Florence Cogswell in Lakeview, Michigan.

In October of 1955, Betty married Harvey Stilson building a legacy together of which would span over 55 years and include 3 children; Robert, Barbara, and Steven.

Betty worked over 15 years at Wolverine and in later years was a floral designer for Phil’s Flowers, a job she very much enjoyed.

Her legacy also lives on through her 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Each-and-every child throughout the generations had a special place in her heart – from being at the birth of the first one nearly 50 years ago to seeing a picture the newest born a week before her passing and wishing she could just hold her.

Trips to Mackinaw City, patiently sewing pillows for a first home, baking cookies, rushing to granny’s house because there was candy waiting, sharing a story about their baseball game and how granny played first base, that you better behave, or you’d get the slipper (which never happened) and that EVERY child born throughout the generations looked just like her are great memories to name a few. Her lessons and love created lasting bonds and cherished memories which are endless and will be remembered for many years to come.

Betty was known for her quick wit, and sense of humor. In her younger years, Betty had a zest for life -- roller skating with her dear friend Naomi and playing softball taking the position of 1st base very seriously. A good basketball game on TV was well worth her staying up late for. Her passion for cards was well-known. She never turned down a Euchre game and would go to the Senior Center every chance she could to play, building many friendships there.

She imparted to her children not just practical skills, but also the invaluable knowledge of how to survive a hard time, a testament to her resilience and unwavering hope for their futures. She always had an open ear, and it was rare to leave her home without being offered something to take along with you.

Years after the passing of her beloved husband, Betty found companionship with her special friend, Bruce Carlson, who also predeceased her.

Betty is survived by her children Barbara J. Richards (Steve), Steve Stilson (Penny), and daughter-in-law Mary Stilson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Harvey, son Robert, and all her siblings.

Also mourning her loss is her 4 legged pal and McDonald’s companion Otis; along with special friends Lou Ann, Sheila, Ruth, and Jane.

The family would like to thank Emmanuel Hospice for their tender care and Daggett Gilbert Funeral home to which they have entrusted to her care.

Per her request there will be no service. A private family gathering will take place in the future.

Cheryl "Cherie" Wensloff, 78

Cheryl “Cherie” Wensloff passed peacefully away on July 4, 2025, cradled in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by her precious family, and in the atmosphere of unconditional love that she always so freely gave. She was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a sister, a cousin, and a friend.

But more than any title, she was a quiet force of grace… tending the world around her with a gentleness that left everything that she touched and everyone that she knew to experience a more beautiful world. Her love was not loud, but it was vast. It lived in crisp sheets waving on the clothesline and warmed by the sun; in bubble baths that reached the ceiling; and in fresh-picked berries waiting in a bowl on the counter. Her love lived in hummingbirds buzzing happily at the feeder, in wind chimes singing on the porch, and in the fuchsia pink streaks that she so elegantly wore in her silvery white hair. She continually loved and laughed with a deep intention. She always showed up with her arms full of food, gifts, and time that had no boundaries. She never wanted you to leave, and always signed her love letters and cards with “bunches and bunches” of love. She always remembered what you liked and noticed the smallest of things. At night, she had to take one more picture of that glorious sunset, and then she would always remind us to “get some good rest.” She gave her presence like it was the most natural thing in the world to do, because to her, it really was.

Her strong but quiet faith in God guided her hands as much as her heart. She deeply believed in Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Her actions were demonstrated in kindness, in connection, and in giving. She lived her devotion in the way she cared, in the way she listened, and in the way she simply existed. Even as her body was fading away- she remained steadfast, generous, and full of joy. She gave us all a thousand quiet memories, stitched together like a quilt to gently wrap around our grief. Oh, how we will miss her! And now, she’s gone to meet Jesus and her beloved daughter Amy, who has been waiting for her in Heaven’s Glory. Can you imagine the reunion? She also smiled big when we mentioned her rottweiler dog Brutus, who was going to be there waiting for her in her mansion. Her continual prayer for our family was a prayer we remembered years ago from our Grandma Tefft: “May the circle be unbroken…” meaning both here on earth, and especially for us to be reunited all together in Heaven through knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This was also her daughter Amy’s wish.

The river is now crossed. The pain is no more. The race is finished. The sting of death has been taken away. May she hear the words “well done, good and faithful servant.” The welcome party in Heaven is surely full of laughter and soft-landing tears. To honor her, don’t look for grand gestures. Just hang your sheets on the line and take time to inhale the freshness of the air. Let your goodbye linger just for a moment longer. Cry if you must. Feed the birds. Tend the flowers. Look for that special frog. Hear the cooing of the beautiful white dove. Make the homemade chicken soup. Love gently, but fiercely. Because that’s what she did. Dan graduated from Vestaburg High School in 1983. While there, he was active in the band, a member of the National Honor Society, and was also a bit of a prankster. Dan went on to graduate from Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts / advertising and journalism in 1988. Although Dan had many different jobs, he consistently found a way to connect with the community, sharing a story and a smile with everyone he met.

Dan eventually became a director at BBBS and he continued to make a positive impact on the community through various outreach programs and fundraising events. Dan’s service to the community was not limited to his day job though, as he filled his free time as a board member for multiple organizations. Dan was involved in the Hope House Board, as well as the Gratiot County Planning Commission.

Dan continued to give back to the community by spreading his love of music through many venues and many instruments. He even brought this love of music to his coworkers, often heard strumming on a guitar or singing at his desk. Dan was active at local open mics and donated his time to perform at fundraisers. He loved to travel to different concerts to see live music, too.

Dan married Karen Avery, of Elm Hall, on September 10, 2011. From this marriage, Dan gained two kids that he loved as his own: Thomas and Kara Anderson. He loved being a dad and a grandpa to his two grand-dogs, Suki and Athena. Dan and Karen loved to travel together, whether for museums, live concerts, or sight-seeing new cities.

Donna Lou McNerney, 96

Donna Lou McNerney, age 96, of Vestaburg passed away at the home she was born in on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family. Donna was born to parents, Clare and Gladys (Hare) Beach at the farm on December 16, 1928, along with her twin brother Dean Luis. She arrived in this world with fiery red hair and freckles. More boy than girl, she loved to play outside with her best friend (Dean). Donna grew up during the Great Depression, forever touching her life, teaching her to make the most of what she had and to value things until they have truly worn out.

She went to a one-room schoolhouse, on the corner of Crystal and Kendaville roads. Donna said everything she learned she did by watching Dean. She graduated with the Class of 1946 at Vestaburg High School, where she was the 5’2” starting defensive guard on the undefeated girls’ basketball team back in the day when they played 6 on 6 and only 3 players on each team could be in either the offensive or defensive zone at one time. As such she was inducted into the Vestaburg Sports Hall of Fame. After high school, Donna’s father helped her through beauty school at M J Murphy Beauty College. There she excelled and was even invited to Mackinac Island do the hair of the cast members of “This Time for Keeps” in 1947. Industrious and hardworking, she opened her own salon, employing several other beauticians and became well known in her community. She was at one time president of the Michigan Hairdressers Association and served on the board of the School of Cosmetology run by Montcalm Community College. Later, she sold the business and moved the shop to her home so she could “be there” for her kids and successfully did so until her retirement in 1990.

On May 18, 1949, Robert Joseph (Bobby Joe) McNerney married Donna, and they started a family in 1950. She raised 4 children with strength and humor and a great deal of affection. She loved fiercely, prayed fervently, wept openly and didn’t find it necessary to say, “Wait until your father gets home.” Along with raising her children, Donna raised a host of other kids to love Jesus, as a Sunday School teacher at Vestaburg Church of Christ for nearly 30 years. She was an adventurous soul, growing old but never growing up, even as a grandmother who was still climbing trees higher than the grandkids. Donna also enjoyed gardening, arranging flowers, cooking, sewing, and quilting over the years.

Donna will be deary missed by her daughter Kris Ann McNerney-Blake; sons Timothy (Debbie) McNerney, Thomas (Rhonda) McNerney, Greg (Becky) McNerney; grandchildren Hayley, Holly, Hilary (Philp), Heath (Kellie), Hannah (K.C.), Alisa (Joe), Anna (Chris), Samuel, Amber (Toren), Rebekah, Rachel, and Amanda; 16 great-grandchildren; and sister Janet Yesmunt; brother in law, Tom Johnson.

Preceding Donna in death are her parents; twin brother Dean Beach, who was killed while serving in the Air Force during Vietnam; husband Bobby Joe in 2005; and siblings Kendall Beach, and Jackie Johnson; Brother in law, Norm Yesmunt.

A celebration of life for Donna’s life will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Vestaburg Church of Christ at 3:00 PM with sons Timothy and Thomas McNerney officiating. William Paul Alward Sr., 81

William Paul Alward Sr., 81, of Luther, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2025.

He was born on March 1, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. Bill lived a full and generous life, marked by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a uniquely charming sense of humor.

He retired after 34 dedicated years at General Motors and was a proud member of the American Legion in Lake Orion, as well as a Mason with the Luther Lakes Masonic Lodge.

Bill had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and style — he was famously known for his collection of hats, often donning ones that were delightfully out of place and never failed to spark laughter and curiosity wherever he went.

A man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures, Bill enjoyed organizing (and reorganizing) his wife’s closets, always leaving behind a playful mystery of where things had gone. He was an avid solitaire player and took great joy in “teaching” his grandkids his favorite card game, 52 Pickup — a tradition they will never forget.

He also enjoyed trips to the casino and tinkering in the garage, where he could often be found surrounded by tools, half-finished projects, and peaceful solitude.

Bill’s wit, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Alward; his daughter, Kris Knowlton; and his son, Bill Alward, along with Bill’s wife, Stephanie Alward. He was a proud grandfather to Aaron Knowlton, Olivia Alward, Aaliyah Alward, Landon Alward, and Madison Alward — each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Stevens) Alward and Paul Alward, as well as his beloved siblings: Rosemary, Ruthanne, Sandy, Louise, Roberta, and George.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the family home in Luther, Michigan. All who knew and loved Bill are welcome to attend and share memories.

His family asks that you remember him with a smile — and maybe by misplacing a household item or donning a ridiculous hat in his honor.

Keith was a lifelong builder, known for his craftsmanship, dedication, and hands-on approach to life. Born in Big Rapids, he attended Mecosta Schools and graduated in 1949. After graduation Keith moved to Lansing for work and lived his beginnings of married life. In 1962 they moved back to Mecosta to continue raising their family. He became a well-known figure in the local construction community, building numerous homes in the Canadian Lakes area. His passion for building continued well into his later years, working alongside his son and staying active in the trade until the age of 75.

A man of deep character and colorful humor, Keith was lovingly known as “Grandpa Cowboy” to his grandchildren. He loved old country music and never missed the Grand Ole Opry. He was a member of Sylvester Community Church and enjoyed being part of the community he called home for so many years.

Keith had a deep love for people and took great joy in his family. Not long after high school graduation, Tim joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Through that union Tim worked constructing high voltage transmission lines, as a ground man and ‘digger’/truck driver, in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and West Virginia. Hoping to be at home more, Tim began working at the new pole treating plant, HydroLake, in McBain.

At HyrdroLake, Tim worked as a merchandiser, yard foreman, and last as a semi-truck driver for 27 years. He delivered 70’ to 125’ poles to yards and stake drop sites for Consumers, Top-O-Michigan, Tri-County and other companies, in Upper and Lower Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio. No stake drop was too ‘tricky’ for him. Tim was often called to deliver poles for emergency repairs on holidays, because it was known that he would be sober.

When you see a tall wood pole stamped “Hypole” Tim likely made it or delivered it. During his retirement time enjoyed making bowl and tops with his lathe.

Gene Duane Bongard, 87

Gene Duane Bongard passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at his home on Grass Lake Road. He was surrounded by his family.

Gene was born on January 12, 1938, at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan to Ira Claude Bongard and Lenora Ida (Golz) Bongard. The family moved to Big Rapids in 1939, and Ira and Len built their lifelong home on 190th Ave. Over the coming years, the family expanded to include Gene’s sisters, Carla and Karen.

Gene attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School through eighth grade and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1956, after which he worked a variety of jobs in the Big Rapids area: he was a cooper at the Heinz Pickle Factory and worked in metal fabrication and construction. He briefly studied education at Ferris Institute while working full time, playing intramural flag football and basketball, and playing on the Ferris baseball team in the spring of 1958.

With an adventurous spirit, Gene joined the Army in 1959 and spent three years serving his country. He loved regaling his family with stories about his time as a tank driver in West Germany, ski trips to Austria, and wonderful meals of Wurst, Käse, Schwarzbrot, and Bier. Gene was deeply proud of his military service and the trust placed in him by the officers he served. He was an avid history buff, especially military history, and he could identify any passing plane by the sound of its engine.

Gene returned to Big Rapids in 1962 and was introduced the very next day to Diane Winter by his sister Karen. The two were married on June 29, 1963, and between 1964 and 1971, they had three children: Gene (Geno), Carrie, and Amy. During this time, the family moved into a home built by Gene’s grandfather and great grandmother, and Gene and Diane expanded and renovated the house until it became the beautiful place it is today, complete with lovingly cultivated gardens and two ponds.

The family loved to spend time outside and to play and watch sports. Among their most special times together were camping trips to the Two Hearted River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Going to the Two Hearted was one of the few activities that Gene counted as more important than school; he often said that the lessons learned there were invaluable.

Gene served as a leader at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for decades, taking time off from this work only to follow his children's sports activities. Gene was a true fan of his kids and their teams and was never too busy to play catch or debrief a game. After his children graduated, he continued to work with the Big Rapids High School softball team and was particularly devoted to developing fast pitch softball pitchers, as he himself had been a very successful pitcher in men’s fast pitch leagues in the Big Rapids area for many years. He was inducted into the Mecosta County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, and he never missed an Old Timers’ softball game. He lit up when he talked about the fun and laughs he had with family and teammates at those games. He pitched in his last one at the age of 67.

Throughout, Gene enjoyed traveling (Alaska, Maui, and Maine!), gardening, playing golf, and all things bird-related -- from feeding them, to building houses and feeders, to watching them through his kitchen window and meticulously recording the calls and sightings. He led a life of generosity, love, and faith, and he was both a fierce and a kind family man.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Diane, his sisters, Carla and Karen, and his children: Geno and his wife Ellen (step grandchildren Eric and wife Megan, and Lindsay), Carrie, and Amy (grandchildren Anselm and wife Sabrina, Adelia and partner Matt, and Henry).

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 30, 2025, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Gene’s family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or School.

Deb Helmboldt, 68

Today, we said “see you later” to our adored mom, Grammie, sister, aunt, and friend.

Deb Helmboldt passed away June 10, 2025, the same day she was born 68 years ago, in the care of the Hospice team at Corewell Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids.

Born in Reed City, Michigan to the late Leslie and Eleanor (Rhodes) Eichenberg, she spent her life in this small town. Deb graduated from Reed City High School in 1975, married Randy Rice, and soon welcomed two children, Randy and Sarah. She later married Hal Helmboldt, and in 1989, Deb and Hal embraced the arrival of Casey, the final addition to her family.

Deb was a familiar and welcoming face in the Reed City Rite Aid, as the Store Manager, where she retired from in 2020, after 32 years of dedicated service. She worked tirelessly, to give herself and her family a bright future.

Family is what kept her hustling. Every summer, she hosted her family for a cookout at her home, with the new generation fishing and wading in the pond, while the adults sat on the front porch chatting. She was always on the lookout for clearances at Rite Aid and always had gifts to give the kids, from sidewalk chalk to fleece blankets. We always looked forward to her surprises. While she spoiled her sisters’ kids and grandkids, it was not long before her own lap grew full. Without the constraints of a work schedule, she was free to enjoy her own six grandchildren.

Deb is survived by her children Randy and Alexis (Lakos) Rice, Sarah and Jay Dixon, Casey Helmboldt and Rebeca Lockhart; grandchildren, Oliver, Calvin, Henry, Max, Kyler and Ensley; sister Patty Losey and brother Wayne (Carol) Eichenberg; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by her parents, Leslie and Eleanor Eichenberg and sisters Nancy (Robin) Shoemaker and Carol Kerr. She will be so deeply missed but kept in our hearts and memories.

A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, June 22 at the Lincoln Township Hall (20920 9 Mile Rd, Reed City) from 2:30 to 5:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in Deb’s memory to Corewell Health Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center (Susan P. Wheatlake Reed City). Per her wishes, Deb has been cremated.

The family wish to thank the staff at Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer Center in Reed City for their kindness and care, the staff at the Corewell Health Emergency Department (Reed City), Osceola County EMS, and the ICU team at Corewell Health Butterworth for their compassion and flawless care, and finally the nurses at Hospice of Michigan for their dedication to those they serve and their families.
