Lee Edward Allen, 69

Lee Edward Allen, age 69, of Okeechobee, FL, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, at the family home in LeRoy, MI with family by his side.

Lee was born in Howell, Michigan, on December 21, 1955, the son of Raymond and Gertrude Allen of LeRoy.  He attended Catholic and Public schools at St. Joseph’s and Pine River High School before beginning a lifelong career with the American Steamship Company as a merchant marine on the Great Lakes. Beginning as a deckhand, Lee advanced through the ranks to bosun, watchman, wheelsman, third, second, first mate, and ultimately relief captain. Lee continuously upgraded his certification at the Mariners school in Maryland and Ohio and proudly served aboard the Sam Laud, American Republic, MV Buffalo, St. Clair, and H. Lee White transporting iron ore and taconite pellets across the Great Lakes. His career also included service aboard ocean-going vessels (salties) in the Gulf of Mexico, through the Panama Canal, and along the Eastern Seaboard.

Lee’s mechanical curiosity and creativity were boundless. He built his own hovercraft, racecar, windmill and seaplane to mention a few. His traveled adventures began early when, at seventeen, he hitch-hiked through Canada, New York, and Massachusetts, getting back in time to start his senior year of high school. He enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska, road trips to National Parks, travels to Hawaiian Islands, Central America and Europe with family and friends. Among his most meaningful journeys was a mission trip to Ukraine with his mother Gertrude and sister Barb to serve at a children's orphanage.

Lee also obtained a private pilot’s license in the 80’s. He got his love of flying from his father who had built his own experimental aircraft. Lee continued to fly his first airplane, a Grumman Yankee, and later on his father’s airplane, which was a Christavia. Lee was working on completing his own amphibious experimental aircraft.

Lee resided in Okeechobee, Florida for forty years and enjoyed his neighbors of River Acres Air Park, friends from town, his Masonic members, and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) members. Their friendship was a source of comfort and encouragement through the years.

He was a loving and supportive son, brother, uncle and friend to all his family and friends even through the courageous challenge of brain cancer for over six years. He was known for his kindness, generosity and sense of adventure. His strength and warmth touched everyone he met.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents Raymond E. and Gertrude L. Allen of LeRoy. He is survived by his brothers: Henry and Mike (Pam) Allen and sisters: Carolyn (John) Schultz, Barbara, Janet (Mike) Breza, Lucy, Mary and in-laws Connie and Scott. And many dear friends across Michigan and Florida.

Lee’s life was one of curiosity, courage and compassion. He lived the Mariner's Motto “Acta non Verba”. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.

A service celebrating Lee’s life will be held at St Phillip-Neri Catholic Church in Reed City, Michigan on November 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.  A luncheon will be served following the celebration service.  Burial will take place at the Mt. Gerard James O'Connor, 85

Gerard James O'Connor passed away surrounded by family on October 21, 2025 in Stanwood, Michigan. He was born on August 8, 1940 to James and Catherine O’Connor in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Jerry lived an incredibly rich and interesting life. He spent his early childhood in Whitestone, NY, playing stickball and serving as an altar boy. The family later moved to Tenafly, NJ, where Jerry, as an early teen, attended seminary school in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and completed high school at St. Cecilia’s in Englewood, NJ. He continued his education at Fairfield University (CT), studying Marketing and Business. His love of learning, devotion to family, and commitment to community inspired many seminal milestones in his adult life.

After college, Jerry collected and road-raced his many MGs while working in sales in NYC. When drafted for Vietnam, he qualified for and trained as an officer. He was commissioned to serve in Counterintelligence, receiving the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in Vietnam in 1966. Not long after his return to the States, he met his future wife, Lin, at Orbit Al’s (Tenafly, NJ), where she handily beat him in a game of pool. He was hooked, and asked for her hand in marriage three months later.

Jerry possessed an energy that filled a room when he walked in. Once you met him, he was hard to forget. He made people feel as if they were the most important person in the room, and they often left as friends. He took time to listen and held intelligent conversations on a wide variety of topics. If Jerry gave you a nickname, it meant you had touched his heart. He bestowed nicknames upon family, friends, neighbors, and especially nieces and nephews.

As a husband and father, he shared his passion for travel, taking the family on adventures near and far. He loved Broadway musicals, cheered for his Yankees, fondly known as “the good guys”, and was devoted to Notre Dame football. He hosted countless parties for friends and family, always the instigator of the water fight, and famously declared each gathering “a financial failure and a social success” to mark a good time. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and eagerly attended their recitals, games, meets, plays, and graduations, always proud to show his love and support.

Jerry loved to play golf and enjoyed a Guinness after each round. He was in constant search of the perfect swing, but the lack of practice—or the frustration of never finding his tee shots, often interrupted his lifelong quest to become a professional golfer.

His career afforded him the opportunity to travel the world and sell technology. Starting with IBM mainframes in the 1970s, he progressively sold various forms of communication technology, including CAT 5 lines and ultimately satellites and satellite systems - even flying on the Concorde to complete business transactions.

Jerry spent his life immersed in service to his community. From pioneering Hillsdale (NJ) Hawks football and founding Hillsdale Girls’ Softball, serving as a commissioner for Stonybrook Swim Club, advocating for the Bergen Catholic Touchdown & Tee-Off Clubs, serving as Drum Major of the Tri-County Pipe and Drum, creating Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets in Pennsylvania (which advocated for veterans’ care), and as a member of the Mecosta County Optimist Club - his calling was always to give and to help others.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, James and Catherine O’Connor. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Linny), of 58 years. No matter the challenges, he would proclaim his love for her to anyone who would listen. He is also survived by his three children: Kate O’Connor of Stanwood, MI (Brian Czarnecki); Kimberly O’Connor of West Long Branch, NJ; and Rob (B.J.) O’Connor (Heather Andreana) of Orland Park, IL. His greatest loves were his four grandchildren, Nicholas, Meghan, Mackenzie, and Finley, who all adoringly referred to him as “Bepa.”

He is also survived by four brothers: James (Sippewissett, MA), Kevin (Ridgefield, CT), Brian (Campbell Hall, NY), and Thomas (Evansville, IN); his sister, Cathleen (Easton, PA); and many beloved nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many grand doggies and kittens to continue his legacy as an animal lover—despite always professing that he never wanted a “fur baby”! He also leaves behind his best pal in the world, his dog Turlough, though his previous buddy, Cormac the Irish Terrier, would be remiss if he weren’t mentioned by name as well.

Arrangements are in the care of Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mecosta County Optimist Club are greatly appreciated. The viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 27, from 4–7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Remus, MI, at 11 a.m., with a viewing at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, October 28. Jerry will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI, on Wednesday, October 29, at 1:30 p.m.

Joseph Petty, 81

Joseph B. Petty, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 20, 2025, in Newaygo, Michigan, at the age of 81. Born on April 12, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois, Joe’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with adventure, service, travels, and exploration.

Joe spent his formative years in Roselle, IL before enlisting in the Air Force in 1968. Following his service, Joe attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Zoology and master’s degree in Biological Sciences.

After a few years teaching at Detroit Country Day and Forest Hills Central schools, Joe and his wife, Lynda, moved to Saugatuck where they co-founded and operated the Park House Bed and Breakfast for over 20 years. In 2007, the two opened their second Bed & Breakfast, Casa Mirador, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In retirement, Joe and Lynda spent summers on their houseboat at the Newaygo Boat Club, and winters south of Puerto Vallarta in a home they built in Las Juntas y Los Veranos.

An avid mountaineer and hiker, Joe achieved the remarkable feat of climbing Aconcagua in South America and reaching Everest Base Camp One (EBC1) twice. Closer to home, Joe enjoyed hiking in the Rocky Mountains and exploring the trails in Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

Joe’s stewardship of nature extended beyond recreation. All creatures, in all forms, were valuable in Joe’s eyes. Bugs and spiders were always rehomed back into nature, and invasive species like garlic mustard were tirelessly pulled from the landscaping and roadsides. Sunsets, fall colors, flowers, tree burls… his phone was filled with his captures of nature and prove as a testament to his deep respect for all living things.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Lynda (Larson) Petty; daughters Heather Petty-Weston of Denver, CO, Tisha Petty of Carbondale, IL, and Jody Bolhuis (Ryan Lark) of Saugatuck, MI; grandsons Dorian and Odin Weston, Zachary and Jared Bolhuis; and great-grandson Jettson Bolhuis. Joe also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and his most cherished dependent – his dog, Peanut.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph N. and Phyllis (Kreischer) Petty; his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Patrick Mooney; and his brother, Anthony Vecchione.

Joe made numerous friends through his travels around the world. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him and in the beauty of the places he cherished most.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a conservation organization of your choice, honoring Joe’s lifelong commitment to the natural world.

“The mountains have called, and Joe has answered. May we all find the courage to follow our own adventures and relish in the beauties of the world as he did.”

Jeremy Ellis Shelton, 52

Jeremy Ellis Shelton, age 52, from Reed City, Michigan, died suddenly in his home on October 5, 2025.

Jeremy was born in Selma, California July 14, 1973, to parents Nancy (Duren) and Eldon Shelton.  After their parents’ divorce and re-marriages, Jeremy and his sister Jamie were raised by his mom and stepfather Daniel Thornton and spent their childhood years in Vancouver, Washington with his other sisters Bonnie and Brittany.    The summer before high school, Jeremy traveled to Ketchikan, Alaska where his father had established roots with Pat (Coblentz) and his three brothers Eldon, Simon, and James.  Through this experience, Jeremy discovered his love of hunting in the mountains of Southeast Alaska’s coastal rainforest.  Jeremy chose to stay and attended Ketchikan High School where he graduated in 1992.  That following summer and into the next year, Jeremy learned the trades of painting and floor covering and started employment in the family business with Shelton & Sons.

Senior year in high school, Jeremy met and later married Brandi (Allen) on July 14, 1994, and lived in Moscow, Idaho.  Jeremy grew in the floor covering trade and met a lifelong friend, Mark, with whom Jeremy spent his final days doing what he loved most…elk hunting in the Idaho mountains. They moved to Paris, Michigan in 1996 and eventually established their home on Hawkins Road in Chase Township.  They had two daughters, Josie and Abby.  Abby remembers racing her sister to make the first pot of coffee in the morning for their dad–a small, joyful ritual that became a cherished memory.  Josie reflects on a very memorable hunt with her dad where they both shot at the biggest buck of their life.  To this day, no one knows who made the final kill, but both celebrated it as an amazing bonding experience.  During this time, there were many traditions created, trail rides, being active in 4-H with horses, and a value for having family dinners together at the table.

Jeremy grew to become a talented floor covering installer and worked for many of the local businesses.  He started his own successful business, Shelton’s Floor Covering in 2007. Jeremy will live on because of the mentor and apprenticeship he offered to “the boys”- his brothers, when they came and stayed every summer.  It has been said that the boys learned what family was. Eldon specifically saw Jeremy as a father figure, who taught him a great deal about the floor covering trade, hunting, and fishing as all three boys did. Simon speaks of the projects and trouble he used to get into with his brother and James remembers the summers spent together.

Later, after his divorce in 2012, Jeremy shared his life with Tiffany (Johnston) Duddles and had three more wonderful daughters.  Demi treasures their times mudding, riding quads, and hunting — moments full of laughter, adventure, and the kind of fun only he could stir up.  Victoria remembers sitting beside him in the hunting blind, sharing stories and silence in equal measures.  Madalynne (Maddie) holds close the simple joy of playing and taking pictures with her dad, moments that showed his playful side and his pride in all five of his beautiful, smart, talented girls.

In the last couple years, Jeremy formed a new relationship with Jessica Spalo and recently did some traveling back to Alaska and visiting family in Las Vegas, Nevada.  It made him happy to have a newly rekindled friendship with his sister Bonnie where they talked almost daily.

Jeremy is survived by daughters Josephine (Andy) Wright, Abigail (Mason Ferguson) Shelton, Demi Shelton, Victoria Shelton, and Madalynne (Maddie) Shelton, chosen children Kyleigh Weck and Keegan Weck, granddaughter Natalie Rose Wright,  mother Nancy (Daniel) Thornton, father Eldon Shelton, step-mother Pat (David) Moen, sisters Jamie Boyd, Bonnie (Kyle) Olney, and Brittany Thornton, brothers Eldon Shelton, Simon Shelton, and James Shelton, fiancé Jessica Spalo, and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones.  He was preceded in death by his niece Madalynne Marie.

There is no easy way to say goodbye to someone you’re not ready to, to wish you had more time.  The consolation is the belief that he is in a more peaceful place.  Jeremy’s life wasn’t without hardship or imperfection.  There were wounds and battles that complicated relationships and life choices for himself and those who he loved and loved him, but he will be missed for his infectious laugh, adventurous spirit, and epic surf & turf Thanksgiving.  Friends will miss his hospitality and ability to make them feel like family.  He will be remembered as the avid fisherman and passionate hunter.  Whether casting his line for trout, steelhead, or salmon along the Muskegon River or gathered around a bonfire on his cherished 50 acres, Jeremy had a way of living boldly while also finding joy in life’s simple, rugged moments.  While acknowledging the truths of his story, the mixed emotions of an unfinished life, these are some of the qualities and moments that will be held close and remembered.

Jeremy’s daughters and their supporters will be holding his memorial luncheon at the Osceola County Posse Grounds, 21940 6 Mile Rd., Reed City, MI 49677, on October 18, 2025, from 12:00-3:00pm.  If there are any questions, please reach out to Abby Shelton at 231-349-3489.

He enjoyed many jobs, some of which, construction (grain silo's) in Iowa, he owned his own leather and tooling business, 14 years at Evart Products (Ventra) and helped where he could on the farm.

Feike loved the freedom of the road and the wind on his chest, owning many motorcycles in his lifetime, a past member of the Sojourners/Jokers. He enjoyed the profound, uncomplicated peace of the stillness of the woods or trickle of a stream. Feike always said he didn't need to go to church, God was in the woods, and he could talk to Him anytime he wanted. As an avid hunter, fisherman and conservationist, he took a great many hunting trips solo and with his grandson Jesse, his most memorable trip to the UP at Bear Camp. He provided every grandchild (and other unrelated kids too) a fishing rod and some of his hand tied flies, for a sure catch! He grew a bountiful garden and shared his veggies with those he loved. He adored his great-grandchildren (Effie & Jackson & Everliegh) and reconnecting with family after so many years.

Left holding the memories they have close to their hearts and grateful for the time they had with Feike are: daughter, Brenda (Brad) Brooks of Goodyear Lake, step-daughter, Michelle & Tim Littlefield Cadillac, MI. Grandchildren; Isabel Horan, Oneonta, NY, Nathaniel Horan, Oneonta, NY, Jesse & Kyla Taylor, Lake, MI, John & Paige Littlefield Cadillac, MI, sisters: Ferne (Roger) Defreese & Faye (Darold) Bancroft all of Evart; nieces and nephews, Shilo Defreese of Evart, Sierra (Brian) Montgomery of Indiana, Cameron (Kim) Bancroft of Marquette, and past wives; Sandy, Debra and Carol. A great many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins & Friends. We will all miss him dearly.

Feike is now reunited with; his parents, Frederick and Ferne, infant brother, Fred Jr., his first wife, Ruth (Ramsey) Feikema, his son John Feikema, & grandson, Tim Littlefield.

In lieu of flowers, the family feels his memory would best be honored by donating to a nature or wildlife conservation organization of your choosing or planting a tree.

There will be a memorial, for Feike, from 4PM to 6PM on Saturday, November 22nd with military honors at 5:30 PM, at the VFW Hall in Evart for family and close friends. Arrangements and care have been entrusted to Corey Funeral Home, Evart, MI Share online at www.coreyfuneralhome.com

Dianne enjoyed writing and she spent over 50 years as a journalist, reporter, columnist, and photographer for various area papers.  Dianne worked as the editor for the Osceola County Herald and The Reed City News.  She was on staff reporter/photographer for Cadillac Evening News, Osceola County Herald, The Reed City News, Lakeland Tribune/Inter-Lake News (Keego Harbor).  Dianne also worked as a freelance writer and photographer for the Grand Rapids Press, The Big Rapids Pioneer, GRIT, Detroit Free Press, Evart Review, Marion Press, and Saginaw Valley Magazine.  She worked broadcasting a weekly radio interview show for WBRN in Big Rapids and did feature reporting for a local television station.  Dianne really enjoyed writing her weekly column featuring the ups and downs of her life.  She also had weekly personal columns called Jaw Floppin’, Pauses, Reflections, and Brimming Over.  Dianne met a lot of interesting people on her job and covered political figures such as President Nixon, President Ford, and Pat Palson during his bid for president.  One of her favorite interviews was with the wife of composer George Bennard who wrote the popular hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross.”  This meaningful song was coincidentally playing at the time of Dianne’s death.

With her degree in Social Work, Dianne was on a quest to help others.  She started an internship and was later hired at Central Michigan Community Hospital PsychCare as a mental health technician in the early 90’s. Dianne also did an internship at Human Aid in Reed City which she proudly shared she had been sober from alcohol since November 2, 1978!  The best part of her personality is how open she was in sharing her own struggles to help others not feel so alone.  In her writings or in person she always made everyone feel valued and loved.

In 1964 Dianne was married (for 17 years) and she has three children.  Son, Joe Warner of Traverse City, MI.  Daughter, Michelle (Fred) Russell of Muskegon, MI.  Son, Mike (Gena) Warner of Lake Orion, MI.

On September 14, 1996 she married the love of her life, Herb Phelps and started a new chapter in her life. For 29 years they not only loved each other but liked each other too!  This union added new bonus children to her heart. Son, Brad (Carol) Phelps. Daughter Angie (Paul) Hamilton.

Dianne absolutely adored being a wife and mother but her real joy was being Granny to all their grandchildren.  Zack and Reese Bancuk. Corbin and Katelyn Russell.  Abby and Molly Warner. Kaden (Monica), Seth (Alyvia), and Eli Phelps. Colin Knapp. Joshua (Maddie) Hamilton. Elizabeth (Orin) Fussell and their children Evan and Cevanna.  Nathan Hamilton and his children Caisen and Karma. She also adored being Aunt Dianne to her nieces and nephews.

After marrying Herb, Dianne became a member of the United Methodist Church in Reed City, MI. This led her to be more involved and grow closer to God. She took on a new job as the parish assistant and later felt led to study to become a pastor herself. Dianne was very involved in church activities and felt God has called her to share Him with others as a loving and forgiving Father.  She started Granny’s Group, worked with the youth groups, vacation bible school, jail ministries, House of Hope and many many more.   Dianne was also always by her husband Herb’s side at the Osceola County Fair in Evart, the Dulcimer Festival, and the wood carvers events.

Dianne had many talents and hobbies.  She absolutely loved meeting strangers and becoming fast friends.  She really cherished all her close friendships. She loved collecting anything and everything!  Rocks, dollhouses, miniatures, books, puzzles, craft items.  Thrifting brought her so much joy.  She loved to do genealogy.  She enjoyed reading, taking endless photos,  drawing, and pink bellied clouds.  She  loved nature, bird watching and her dog, Gizmo.  Dianne loved doing puzzles and collecting santas.  She was pen pals with Norman Rockwell and an avid collector of all his art works. She loved to laugh and had a wicked sense of humor.  Dianne loved going out to coffee and talking to everyone.  She lived for spending time with her kids or grandkids and going to their sporting events.  She loved dancing and every moment  with her honey of a hubby.  Dianne was all about making memories with the ones she loved most.  Alzheimer's did not take away how much she loved life and the simple things.  She was adamant that we all still live, laugh and love.  We miss her but know that she is healed, happy, and reunited with her family members in Heaven. Memories may fade but love never dies. We have faith we will be united again one day, until then, as she would always write, “Journey on……”

All are welcome to attend Dianne’s Celebration of Life at 11:00 A.M. on October 11, 2025, at the United Methodist Church located at 503 S. Chestnut Street Reed City, Michigan 49442. A luncheon will follow.

Kathleen Joy Payton, 71

Kathleen Joy Payton, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2025. She was born on August 26, 1954, to Clifford and Lillian (Dunn) Atwood.

Kathy spent more than 20 years working in Home Health Care. She lovingly cared for her own mother for more than six years, an experience that deepened her compassion for helping others. Kathy treated her clients as if they were her own family. Often taking them on various outings or out to lunch simply to brighten their day.

In her free time, Kathy enjoyed time with family and often took care of her grandkids. She loved going to yard sales, the beach and taking photos of her loved ones (even when they weren’t looking). Kathy loved attending family reunions and looked forward to her family’s annual trip to the U.P. each year. There she enjoyed sight seeing and visiting numerous gift shops.

Kathy’s heart, however, belonged to her family. She recently celebrated 47 years of marriage with her husband, Ed, who was her best friend. She was a devoted mom and the proudest grandmother, cheering her family on at every turn. She was the kind of grandma who never needed a reason to spoil her grandkids—whether it was a trip for ice cream, surprise gifts, or hours spent building crafts.

Her playful side made her unforgettable. At family gatherings, and banquets with her sisters-in-law—Kathy’s antics were a highlight. If a room grew too quiet, she would always make you laugh. Her sense of humor turned many ordinary moments into cherished memories.

Kathy will be remembered for her strength, selflessness, and ability to make everyone around her feel loved. Her laughter, smile, and every beautiful memory with her will live on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Kathleen is survived by her loving husband, Edward “Ed” Payton; her children, Jody (Robert) Zuern, Micky Payton, Heath (Tara) Payton, and Penny (Bill) Myers; her grandchildren, Londyn, Haidyn, Atlas, Bradlee (Stephanie), Christina, Hannah, and Blake; three great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Denny (Robin) Atwood, Gary (Nida) Atwood, Tim (Toni) Atwood, and Doug (Sue) Atwood. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cherished cousins and friends who will hold her memory close.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her loving parents and son Ralph.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Resurrection Life Church of Big Rapids on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow.
