C. James "Jim" Maturen, 90

C. James Maturen (known to everyone as Jim) passed away on Thursday, August 21, at his home in Reed City at the age of 90. Jim was a loving spouse to Romaine and had just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary, a brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a great friend to many, and a tireless fighter for environmental conservation.

He grew up in Essexville, MI, as a child of Doris and Clarence Maturen, one of the last commercial fishermen on Saginaw Bay, where he witnessed at an early age the assault on our environment. When fishing for fun, he would smell the mouths of bay-caught Walleye and toss back those reeking of chemicals, an early lesson that shaped him into a lifelong environmentalist. He spent the first 32 years of his career protecting Michiganders as a Michigan State Trooper in Romeo and Petoskey in the 1960s and 70s, and then at the Reed City post until his retirement as Sergeant in 1989. But that’s when his life’s work was to begin. He founded the Michigan Wild Turkey Hunters Association and, for decades, worked to restore habitat for these majestic birds. His stewardship brought them back to thrive in Michigan. He inspired generations of schoolchildren by teaching about the call of the wild turkey and their habitat in frequent visits to local public schools. His life in public service continued when he was elected four times as Osceola County Commissioner. He worked to secure recycling services, enhance waste management, and provide services for Osceola County’s elderly. He served for decades on the Michigan Resource Stewards board.

Many know Jim by his radio handle as “North Shore,” as he captained his 16’ 1970s aluminum fishing boat for over 50 years on “The Big Lake” off the point in Ludington. He earned several awards for his work to protect the environment, including the Osceola-Lake and Mecosta Conservation Districts’ Conservationist of the Year, Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council’s esteemed Clarence Kroupa Award, and, most recently, the Michigan Outdoor News 2021 Person of the Year.

His longest-lasting battle was his work to protect Michigan from destructive water withdrawals by mega-corporations. He successfully engaged in a fight to protect water resources in Reed City. He worked alongside the nonprofit, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC), where he served on its board of directors to protect and restore the Muskegon River watershed.

A steadfast friend to many, his 50-year-long weekly playing card and bowling nights with the boys were legendary. He was always quick to lend a hand, dispense advice, and indulging friends, new and old, hosting countless fishing and hunting trips. His support of the nonprofits working to protect the environment includes the great work at FLOW (now Flow Water Advocates), MCWC, and Michigan Environmental Council.

Perhaps his overarching mission was against what he called ‘AISI’—Apathy, Ignorance, and Self-Interest—as he sought to stem the degradation of his beloved Michigan ecosystem. He painfully mourned the skies once black with birds in flight, and the teeming Great Lakes fisheries of his youth. His life’s work was to protect Michigan for his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and for all grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Romaine; his brother, David Maturen, and his wife, Nancy, in Vicksburg; his children, Sherry Maturen in Traverse City; his daughter, Renee Latka, and her spouse, Bill, also in Traverse City; and Brian Maturen and his spouse, Connie, in Cadillac. He leaves behind a better world for his beloved grandchildren, Justin, Kendall, Emilie, Alyssa, Brianna, Chase, and Parker, and his great-grandchildren, Nate and Zoella.

Rest in power, Jim. You were the real deal and will be dearly missed.

Per Jim’s wishes, the family will hold a private memorial service in the coming weeks.

Joe Hamilton, 75

Joe Carr Hamilton, 75, of Big Rapids, Michigan, passed away on August 8, 2025. Born on April 10, 1950, to Carr and Eva (Tribe) Hamilton, Joe spent his life in Big Rapids, where he built a legacy of kindness, generosity, and hard work.

Joe was known for his willingness to help anyone in need—whether it was mowing a neighbor’s lawn or plowing snow on a cold winter morning. A dedicated worker, he spent his career in Quality Control, bringing diligence and pride to every task.

An animal lover through and through, Joe found joy in the wildlife that visited his property. He especially loved watching and photographing the eagles and deer that passed through, and he fed the squirrels so often that they became comfortable enough to lay down while eating. Joe also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trying new things—always ready for an adventure, at least once.

He is survived by his two daughters, Becky (Mike) Byrnes and Dawn (Matt) Gould; grandchildren Jeremy (Angie) Byrnes, Mitchell (Ashley) Byrnes, Ashlie (Cody) House, and Skyler (Liz) House; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his best friend, Dale Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ARC of Mecosta.

No services are planned at this time.

Timothy George Wilson, 33

Timothy George Wilson, 33, of Edmore, passed away on August 6, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Born July 27, 1992, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tim was the beloved son of Timothy Wilson and Shari Hartman. He was a devoted partner, father, son, brother, and friend. But above all, Tim lived for his family. His heart belonged to his soulmate, Breann Metcalf, and their three beautiful children; Jayce (9), Kate (6), and Jo (1). They were his world, and every part of his life revolved around loving, protecting, and laughing with them.

Tim was a family man through and through. His greatest joy in life was the family he built. Whether he was taking his kids fishing, hunting with family, dancing in the living room, or doing karaoke just to make everyone smile, he was happiest when surrounded by his people. He didn’t need much beyond love, laughter, and a reason to sing.

Tim worked at Baker Hughes, where he wasn’t just clocking in, he was surrounded by friends he truly cared about. The bond he had with his coworkers meant the world to him, and they became a second family.

Tim is survived by the love of his life, Breann Metcalf, and their three children, who were his entire world: Jayce Wilson (9), Kate Wilson (6), Jo Wilson (1) and his dog Remy.

He is also survived by his father, Timothy Wilson, and his wife, Heather Wilson; his mother, Shari Hartman, and her husband, Andy Hartman; his siblings: Millie Kyser (Wayne) and their children Brogan and Haylynn; Sarah King (Patrick) and their son Tristan; Rachel Courtright (Gary) and their sons Bentley and Carter, and Lynn Brown (Zeek) and their daughters Evelyn and Prasiah; as well as Heather’s son, Cade. He is also remembered with love by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who will never forget the way Tim made them feel.

Tim was preceded in death by his grandparents Sandra and Edward Aemisegger, Russell McCardle, and Richard Wilson; uncle: Charlie WIlson; and by his beloved niece, Spencer King. We find peace in knowing that Spencer now has her Uncle T-Man beside her.. someone to keep her close and watch over her, just like he would have done here.

Tim’s absence leaves an unfillable space in the lives of those who loved him. He was the kind of man who made everyone feel seen, safe, and loved without asking for anything in return. The echo of his laughter, the warmth of his hugs, and the strength of his love will live on in his children and in all of us who were lucky enough to be loved by him.

He was one of the good ones. The kind you only get once.

A celebration of life luncheon will be held on August 23rd in the Camille’s Prime garden at 506 W. Broadway St. in Mt. Pleasant 11am - 2:30pm.

David Franklin Wilkerson, 83

David Franklin Wilkerson, better known as Frank, Mr. Frank or Dave, now rests in the care of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On Friday, July 25, 2025 he unexpectedly passed away at home, in Evart, at the age of 83.

Frank was born February 9, 1942 in Fisk, MO to Samuel D. and Jeanette (Smith) Wilkerson. After the passing of his parents, at a young age, he was raised by his half sister, Ruth and husband, Ralph Fort.

Frank graduated from Farwell High School in 1959 and immediately entered the workforce at Holly Carburetor in Clare, then to Grand Rapids making golf clubs, and shortly thereafter, at the O-So Beverage Plant in Clare. On July 15, 1961 he married Marie Carmichael, in Evart and they raised their family in the Clarkston area. After marriage to Marie he took a job with a road construction crew. In February 1962 he accepted a job at Pontiac Motors, now GM where he was a member of the Union. After two years of working on the assembly line, he was accepted into the skilled trades program, from which he retired in May 1993, as a metal model maker. Frank “Dave” made lifelong friends who have taken trips, attended special lunches and held summer picnics.

In 1966, Frank was drafted into the US Army, completed basic training in Fort Knox, KY and survival training in Fort Polk, LA, before being sent to Vietnam. He served in the First Cavalry Division, earning a bronze star. Frank was honorably discharged in 1968 and fulfilled his obligations in the reserves until 1972. Frank was a member of Evart VFW Post 7979 and truly honored to participate in the spring 2022 Mid Michigan Honor Flight. He was honored to have son Bradley as his guardian for the trip. He also was fortunate to have brother in-laws, Ned Carmichael and Herb Johnson traveling with him as well as Herb's brother, Ralph Johnson.

In 1982, Frank and Marie built their retirement home south of Evart. Marie's parents occupied the home until their deaths. In 1993, Frank and Marie made it their permanent residence where neighbors and friends became a part of Frank's life. He was more than willing to do odd jobs for farmers and friends in his workshop/barn. He was an avid Deer Hunter who opened his doors every season to "the freeloaders". Since the early 80’s, Frank & Marie have traveled on annual adventures, with a special group of friends, to various places including: houseboats, cruises, VRBO’s and made wonderful memories.

Frank enjoyed restoring old tractors and seldom missed the Buckley Old Engine Show. One might say he was addicted to auctions and swap meets. Participating in so many by Currie Auction Service, he was specifically given a laminated #43. He was self-sustaining, could fix anything and never had to call a handyman until his later years. He made miniature workable cannons, one for each son, large doll houses for his grandkids and a miniature steam engine that also functions. Frank repaired an old windmill and placed it on the original property where he hunted.

He was a practical jokester, who loved to visit and was a good provider. As careful as he took care of the bees he tended throughout the years, he took care of his family. He was critical of his boys when he knew they could do better. He also knew it was in their best interest to instill in them core values, such as: hard work, problem solving and diligence.

Frank is survived by: his beloved wife of 64 years Marie of Evart; two sons, Bradley (Michi) Wilkerson of Evart and Brett (Tracey) Wilkerson of Painted Post, NY, who he was very proud of; grandchildren, Colleen Davis, David (Brea) Wilkerson, and Alison Wilkerson all of Georgia, and Andrew & Abigail Wilkerson of NY; great grandchildren, Nash, Brealeigh and Beau Franklin Wilkerson; two sisters, Jeanetta Birkenmeier of Caro and Francis Grove of Farwell; brothers-in-law, James (Judy) and Nedro (Reta) Carmichael and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Frank was preceded in death by: an infant son: his sister, Ruth (Ralph) Fort; brothers, Charles Samuel, Harold (Nina) and Elmer (Betty) Wilkerson; his parents, Samuel and Jeanette; his mother and father-in-law, Stewart (Lulu) Carmichael; sisters-in-law, June (Maurice) Corey and Edna (Herb) Johnson; brother-in-law, Edwin (Linda) Carmichael and several nieces and nephews.

There wasn't anything that he would not do for them. Dick was dependable, reliable, fun loving, a caring listener with a good shoulder to lean on. He was the kind of guy that was there to cheer you up and make you feel good. He was a truck driver with an unforgettable side and who was well set in his ways.

Joseph Lee Kailing, 61

Joseph Lee Kailing, age 61, of White Cloud, passed away peacefully at his home on July 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 5, 1963, in Big Rapids. Joe was the eldest of seven children born to Robert Kailing and Phyllis Withers. He attended St. Mary-St. Paul Catholic Church in Big Rapids.

On May 26, 1990, Joe married the love of his life, Eva. Together they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and faith. They raised their four children, Chris, Robert, Katie, and Emmalee in the Big Rapids area, teaching them the values of integrity, kindness, and perseverance. Joe was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his family.

Joe had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time cutting wood in the winter, feeding the birds and squirrels, or camping, hunting and fishing with his family. He loved raising and caring for his livestock and pets, one of many values his dad, and grandpa Joe instilled in him.

Joe began working with his dad driving dump trucks when he could barely reach the pedals or see over the steering wheel. This fostered a strong work ethic which started him on his lifelong devotion to hard work. Over the years, he was employed at Western Concrete, Jomar Construction, Hydaker-Wheatlake (ANR Pipeline), and M.J. Electric before proudly owning and operating Kailing Sand and Gravel.

A proud member of the IBEW 876, Joe was known for his incredible work ethic and was rarely found idle. He was honest, generous, and fiercely loyal. He was a man of strong conviction—always willing to stand up for what was right and help those in need, often carrying the cost when others could not. Joe loved deeply and forgave easily.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 35 years, Eva; their four children: Chris (Macy) Kailing, Robert Kailing, Katie Kailing, and Emmalee (Zachary) King; his siblings: Maurice (Tammy) Kailing, Tim Kailing, Mollie (Vaughn) Cook, Jill (Luke) Baumgardner, Jodi (Matt) Doxtater, and Erin (Mike) Dusenberry; his brother and sister in-laws, David (Kim) Dennis and Mary (Wayne) Snider respectively; grandchildren: Sofia, Eva, Liam, and Reyna; many cherished nieces and nephews, including his niece Rachel, who was like a daughter to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law Cris Dennis; and his in-laws, Keith and Faith Dennis.

Wayne A. Hacker, 87

Born March 10, 1938, in Entrican Michigan to Frederick and Opal (Burris) Hacker.

Wayne passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on July 17,2025 at the age of 87.

Wayne married Janet Ann Scott on October 23, 1959. He attended school in Entrican, MI. He worked for the local farmers in the Entrican and Stanton area in his youth.

Wayne liked to tell the story of how he came to work for the Montcalm County Road Commission. He said that he was always at the shop asking for a job and if he’s always going to be there he might as well be working. He also obtained the nickname Yogi after he started at the county. Wayne and Janet also ran an AFC home for. about 25 years.

Wayne has always been a character, full of life and happy go lucky. One of his greatest pleasures was teasing whoever was around. When he was younger there wasn’t a yard sale he could drive by or try to talk the price down. He LOVED his Farmall tractors of which he had many (kind of like the yard sales, he didn’t pass one up if he could buy it). He enjoyed going to the “Jams”, music concerts of a sort all over the surrounding area. He spent a lot of his time tinkering in the garage, despite his tools “disappearing” after his sons and grandsons worked on their vehicle.

More than anything Wayne loved his spending time with family his family. He loved having a party at the house because everyone would be around and hosted many pig roasts. In the winter he liked watching the kids slide down Hacker hill, from his kids to his great grandchildren and many neighbor kids as well. But one of his greatest accomplishments was mowing the hill without rolling the tractor.

Wayne is survived by his children and their families; Kim and Randy Papist of Newberry, MI and their children Anthony and Shannon Papist and their son Wesley of Interlochen, MI and Stuart and Hollie Papist and their children Lillie, Hope and Kaden of Vestaburg, MI; Scott and Robin Hacker of Ewell, MI and their children Becky and Craig Hacker and their children, Jasper and Magnolia of Shepard, MI and Ryan and Stephanie Hacker with their children Payton and twins Paige and Grace of Vestaburg, MI; Bill and Angel Hacker and their children Willie of Vestaburg, MI and Travis of Mt. Pleasant, MI; Jon and Lisa Hacker with their children Maverick and Letty of Vestaburg, MI and Eva’s children, Grant Hacker and Hana with soon to be baby girl, Hazel of Vestaburg, MI and Jacob and Tommy of Stanton. He also is survived by his beloved “damn” dog Duke.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Opal Hacker, his wife Janet Hacker, his daughter Eva Hacker and grand children Amanda Hacker and Kevin Papist. He was the last of his siblings who preceded him in death, Carl, Francis, Ruth, Don and Larry.

A celebration of life will take place at Ferris Center Church of Christ on Monday, July 21, 2025. Visitation will start at 1:00 pm with the service at 2:30 pm. Reverend Henery Hawver will be officiating.

Arrangements made by Brigham Funeral Chapel.

David "Chris" Christian Cady, 72

This world turns with a little less creativity as of July 14, 2025 when David "Chris" Christian Cady died peacefully at home. He was 72 years old and resided in Evart, Michigan.

Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Chris lived a life shaped by quiet strength, deep curiosity, and a love for both the people and places that mattered most to him. Though he traveled widely in earlier years—holding a lifelong fondness for Hawaii— his truest joy was in the simpler moments, working with his hands, tending his plants, and spending time in the calm stillness of his shop.

Chris was a man of few words and many gifts. A master wood craftsman, he could transform raw materials into objects of remarkable beauty and precision. Equally at home among his tools or his plants, he brought the same care and creativity to everything he touched—whether carving from wood or coaxing blooms from the earth.

Though he lived quietly, those who knew him never doubted his love. His calm presence, dry wit, and unwavering thoughtfulness left a lasting impression.

Chris is survived by: his sisters, Charlene (Joel) Perron of Massachusetts, Rosanna Patton of Evart, and Brenda (Gary) Nowak of Arkansas; as well as his nieces, Layla Nordhoff (Jeffrey) of Cedar Springs, and Melissa Rohen (James) of Evart, and two great nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by: his parents, David C. Cady and Barbara L. (Brown) Cady, and his younger brother, Phillip L. Cady.

A simple graveside memorial service will be held at Sylvan Township Cemetery on Saturday, July 26th at 5:30 PM. Cremation and care have been entrusted to Corey Funeral Home in Evart, Michigan. Friends and family are invited to share memories and condolences at coreyfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chris’ honor to the National Audubon Society, a tribute to his lifelong love of the natural world.
