Vernald "Vern" Cole, 79

Vernald “Vern” Cole, age 79, of Remus, Michigan, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on June 12, 2025, in Lansing, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on Christmas Eve, 1945, in Detroit to Bethel Cole and Eula Combs, Vern had a life full of stories, laughter, and good old-fashioned hard work.

Vern was never one to sit still. Over the years, he wore many hats: a Ford factory worker, poultry butcher, and even a well-known vendor at Detroit’s Eastern Market, where he sold honey and eggs from the Amish with a smile and a story for everyone who walked by. If you ever bought eggs from Vern, you probably got a sermon and a joke in the same transaction.

In 1964, he married the love of his life, Judy Burke, and the two began their family in the Detroit area. Later, they moved to Remus, where Vern built something lasting—Cole Tire—a business that became not just a local staple, but a family affair. When he wasn’t turning wrenches or talking tires, he was tending to his cattle, helping on the farm, or hunting in the Michigan woods.
Vern loved animals, adored his grandkids, and especially enjoyed taking them to church with him. A devout Christian, Vern was an active member of Mecosta “The Village” Free Methodist Church, always eager to share the Good News and lend a helping hand—or an earful of wisdom—to anyone who needed it.

Street-smart, stubborn in all the right ways, and always quick with a quip, Vern had a way of lighting up a room without even trying. He believed in working hard, helping others, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures—like going to the beach at School Section Lake or grilling up something fresh for a family get-together.

Left to carry on his stories and spirit are his children, Lonny (Pam) Cole, Karen (Mark) Snyder, Larry (April) Cole, and Wendy (Matt) Newville; son-in-law, Robert Snider; siblings, Betty, Dennis, Vance, Bernice, and Rolland; 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Judy; his daughter, Kathy Snider, his parents, and brothers, Leon and Ricky.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, June 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus. A funeral service to celebrate Vern’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, at The Mecosta “The Village” Free Methodist Church, with a luncheon to follow (because no Cole family event ends without food and laughter).

Memorial contributions may be directed to the church Vern loved so much. Envelopes will be available at the visitation and service.

Vern’s legacy is one of faith, family, and a whole lot of elbow grease. He’ll be missed—but never forgotten.

Josephine Anne Davis, 88

Josephine Anne Davis, age 88, of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Corewell Health Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids.

She was born July 3, 1936, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Butler) Ottobre. Her family later relocated to Big Rapids, where she graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1955. A year later, on June 9, 1956, she married Martin E. Davis, Sr. Together they built a life on the Davis family farm, raising seven children and nurturing a legacy of love, resilience, and laughter.

Josephine had a quiet strength and a curious spirit. She found joy in simple pleasures—her vibrant flower gardens, rock collecting, especially pudding stones and round rocks, she could spend hours sorting through dirt piles in search of hidden gems, often driving Mart nuts trying to use the dirt for a project. She enjoyed crocheting, and her dollhouse, which Mart spent hours carefully customizing to her vision.

A homebody in her later years, Josephine cherished the comfort of her space. She loved clipping and collecting recipes—more for the joy of having them than using them—and spent countless hours birdwatching from her window, with a special fondness for hummingbirds. While she preferred quiet moments to social outings, her home was always open to family. Halloween visits from grandchildren were a favorite tradition, and no one left without a photo by the fridge.

Josephine has boxes of memories, including pictures of kids, cards, critters, and mementos. If you sent her a card or pictures you can be sure that it's somewhere filed in the archives with everything else. Nothing was too small to be saved and remembered. Her warmth, humor, and gentle nature will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters Mary Myers and Lisa Davis of Big Rapids; her son Raymond “John” Davis (Jen) of Weidman; 31 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren; her brothers Paul, Patrick, Jim, and Don Ottobre; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donald James Carothers, 89

Donald James Carothers, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 25, 2025. He was one month shy of 90 years old. Don was born June 25, 1935 in Reading, Michigan, the fifth of six children born to Dale Herbert and Gertrude Viola (Farnsworth) Carothers.

Don joined the Air Force through the Delayed Entry Program before graduating from Reading High School in 1953. That summer, he and his brother travelled north to Big Lake in Evart where they decided to cool off and take a swim. They swam out to a stationary raft in the middle of the lake to rest and get some sun. Little did they know that decision would change the course of Don's life forever. It seems that the raft belonged to a family that was staying out at the lake. Their teenagers decided to swim out to the raft and run the trespassers off. It was at that moment that Don met Sharon Ann Head, the love of his life.

They married the following June right after Sharon graduated from Evart High School. Don was very proud of his 22 year career in the Air Force. By the time of his retirement in 1975, he had earned the rank of Master Sergeant and was Aircraft Maintenance Superintendent for the 305th Air Refueling Wing at Grissom Air Force Base, Indiana. One of his most exciting tales to recount from his early years in the Air Force was when he and 20 other airmen survived the fiery crash of their B-36 near Denver on November 16, 1956. You can be sure that Sharon did not find his experience exciting in the least.

After the military, Don was a Pinkerton man for a while. He was tired of the moving around and decided to start a second career at Dean Foods by working 20 years at the Evart Dairy Plant. Don and Sharon didn't do much sitting around, even in retirement. They naturally became snowbirds and wintered in Florida and spending summers in Michigan, often out at Big Lake. The lake and park had always been a favorite gathering place for their large extended family over the years. So much so that Don and Sharon took over managing Crittenden Park at Big Lake for eight years.

Don's most important job, however, was family man. He was a devoted husband to Sharon for over 64 years until her passing in 2018. Together they raised three children: Richard, Douglas and Karren. One of Don's greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren sharing his love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting. It's very hard to sum up a life of hard work, service and love in just a few paragraphs. Don was a great presence in all our lives who was loved greatly, will be missed deeply and remembered always.

Don is survived by his three children, Richard (Mary Douglas) Carothers of Berrien Springs, Douglas (Leisa Massie) Carothers of Sears, and Karren Keena of Evart; grandchildren, Kacey (Jeffery) Lyon of Evart, Beverly (Aram) Street of Paris KY, Joseph (Jessica) Castillo of North Carolina, Nikki (Josh) Larson of Big Rapids, Corey Castillo of Big Rapids, Kristen Keena of Evart, Timothy (Cheyanne) Keena II of Evart, Amanda (Jordan) Saunders of Evart ; great-grandchildren, Landon, Brayson, Annelie, Gracie, Callie, Brantley, Emmaleigh, Vaughn, Audrey, Adeline, Henry, Camren, Samantha, Jordyn, Emery, Liam, Mallory, Layla, Brennan Tillie; siblings, Bill Carothers of Florida, Harold Carothers of Florida; sisters-in-law Mickey Head of Evart, Janet Walls of Colbert GA, and LaVerne Crissman of Leesburg FL ; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends. Don was preceded in death by: his wife, Sharon Ann Carothers; his parents, Dale and Gertrude Carothers; sisters, Helen Sharpe, Barbara Lambertson, Anna Horning; his in-laws, Elden and Dorothy Head; unborn daughter, Sarah Elizabeth; brothers-in-Law, Irv Crissman, Gene Walls and Jim Head; Son-in-Law, Timothy Keena Sr.; and several aunts and uncles.

Per Don's wishes, cremation and care have been entrusted to Corey Funeral Home and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 2pm at the VFW Hall located at 4681 85th Avenue in Evart with military honors held 3PM graveside at Forest Hill Cemetery, 7850 6 Mile Road, Evart. Afterwards, please join the family for a luncheon in Don's honor at the VFW Hall.

Ronald K. Shepler, 89

Ronald K. Shepler, age 89, of Big Rapids, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025. He was born on November 13, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the son of Melvin L. Shepler and Cora E. Henlen.

A 1953 high school graduate, Ron attended the University of Maryland, where he participated in the ROTC program while earning a bachelor's degree in engineering 1957. There he met the love of his life, Virginia (Ginger), and the two were married on November 8, 1958. Ron was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force rising to the rank of captain. He served as a consultant to the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency and then returned to school to learn more about the theoretical side of cryptography while raising his family.

In 1973, he earned his PhD in mathematics at the University of Maryland and began his teaching career at Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia. Ron and his family later moved to Big Rapids, Michigan, where he joined the mathematics faculty at Ferris State College (now Ferris State University). He served as treasurer of the Ferris Faculty Association for many years and retired in 2012.

Ron was an unassuming fellow with a keen sense of irony. He enjoyed history, from ancient Greek culture to World War II, and learning about various civilizations. He was always eager to figure out how to fix or build new things and tackled countless home projects over the years. When he wasn't reading or repairing, he could be found at Clear Lake on the golf course. Ron was exceptionally kind and patient and was the rock of his family. They will miss most of all his deadpan dry wit and self-effacing humor. He never seemed to mind if his subtle history or science references went unappreciated.

Ron was deeply devoted to his family and leaves behind a legacy of integrity, intelligence, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Virginia Shepler; Children: Kent (Gail) Shepler, Anne (Olav Richter) Shepler, Kathy (Layne) Fountain; Grandchildren: Owen and Ryan Shepler, Phoebe and Torben Richter, Andrea and Layne Jr. Fountain. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private services are being held. Arrangements are in the care of Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. To leave a memory or share a condolence, please visit www.daggettfuneral.com.

Douglas "Doug" J. McQuestion, 79, of LeRoy

Douglas ”Doug” J. McQuestion of LeRoy, passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was born on August 22, 1945. A few years before graduating from LeRoy High School in 1964, Doug joined his father’s business, where he would work alongside his four brothers until he retired.  At retirement from road construction, he formed C & D Construction where he continued building spec homes in Cadillac and digging wells around the area with his backhoe. In 1964, Doug married his wife of 61 years, Connie Lockhart.

Anyone that knew Doug knows that his favorite thing to do was to have a drink at the bar while playing Keno and catching up with his friends, but if he wasn’t there he enjoyed playing Uno at the dinner table with his family. In his younger years you could find him fishing, building something in his “hobby house”, or playing golf with his buddies on Thursday nights.

Doug was a true renaissance man: there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do, and once he set out to do something, he wouldn’t quit until the job was finished. If anyone needed help fixing something, whether it was the brakes on a car or the remodeling of a house, he was there. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his family and friends.

Remaining to cherish Doug’s memory are his beloved wife, Connie McQuestion (Lockhart); his children Scott and Lori; his grandchildren Paige, Kaylie, and Robert, and his granddaughter Michaela, who he most lovingly referred to as “his Rosie”.

He is also survived by his brothers, Steve (Joyce) McQuestion, and Robert Alan (Renee) McQuestion.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Durwood J. and Ella Mamie McQuestion, and his brothers Richard “Dick” McQuestion and Gerald “Jerry” McQuestion.

Doug was profoundly loved by many, and left memories that will forever be cherished by those lucky enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on forever in our hearts.

Larry Edward Conrad, 78, of Reed City

Larry Edward Conrad, born on October 30, 1946, of Reed City, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his bed on May 16, 2025, under Hospice care.

Larry leaves behind his two sons, Sean and Michael Conrad, as well as two grandchildren; Lisa Conrad, to whom he served as a father figure; and his brother, Tom (and Vicki) Conrad, and sister, Kathy (and Mike) Green. They all lovingly remember him as one who loved wholly and gave without expectation of anything in return.

Leaving his small hometown after graduating high school, Larry moved to the Capitol where he worked as a file clerk for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in pursuit of his aspiration of becoming an agent. As one who felt a deep sense of patriotism to his country and also knowing that Hoover respected men who served, Larry enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War but served in military police and ultimately in military intelligence, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, instead of combat deployment.  Upon completing his service, he was honorably discharged and returned to civilian life, studied accountancy, and worked as an entrepreneur throughout his life.

Larry enjoyed being in nature, with a special appreciation for fishing, gardening, and grilling, as well as outdoor sports—particularly basketball, tennis, and golf—and indoor sports, with a keen love of billiards, cards, and darts. From his father, Lawrence, and grandfather, Percy, he loved stamp collecting, numismatics, and movies, sharing not only his wealth of knowledge but also his collections with those he loved, encouraging them toward finding hobbies. From his mother, Elaine, and grandmother, Flossie, he bonded through acts of service, especially cooking and giving. Those who knew him best would recognize most his love of silliness, laughter, and animals of all kinds—though a special affection for strays and rescues.

In accordance with his wishes, Larry will be cremated, his ashes scattered in the places that brought him the deepest joy and peace—the corners of the world he most loved. Those wishing to honor his memory may consider supporting their local animal?welfare organization—or adopting an animal in need—in Larry’s name.

May the memory of his laughter and love touch those who remember him.

She was preceded in death by her sister Ann Reed, brothers Jimmie, Eldon, and Bill Spence, brother-in-law Forrest Reed, and sister-in-law Hazel Spence. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory.

Ginger embraced her role as a devoted stepmother with warmth and grace, creating lasting bonds with each of her “children” and their families. She was a loving wife, a caring sister, and a thoughtful aunt.

A lifelong lover of animals, especially cats, Ginger’s compassion extended to all creatures great and small. She also had a deep passion for music, particularly country, and cherished her visits to Nashville to spend time with her brother Eldon.

Her quiet strength, gentle spirit, and steadfast love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank Corewell Health Hospice who provided loving and compassionate care to both Ginger and her family in her final days.

A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held at the Pruitt - Livingston Funeral Home in Reed City Michigan on May 17th, at 12:00. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00pm on May 16th and 11:00-12:00 on May 17th.

Born on April 8, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Robert (“Bob”) and Shirley Baker, Lonna attended Howard City High School, where she met one of her lifelong friends Sharon “Dee” Brooks. Despite many challenges throughout her life, Lonna was dedicated to her family and determined to provide a good life for her children and grandchildren. Overcoming poverty at an early age, Lonna was a resilient, hard-working mother, often holding down two and even three jobs, at times. She ultimately and proudly found her career calling at ANR Pipeline in Big Rapids, where she was hired in the 1980’s as the only female engine mechanic at that facility. Later in her career, she successfully studied for, and was promoted to, an engine technician, and was the only female technician in her company-wide training class. Ultimately, she was promoted to a management position, again becoming one of the first women in company history to hold such a title. After her “retirement” from the company, she returned as a contract employee and worked in the administration offices with one of her best friends, Barbara Park, until she retired for a second time. In her free time, Lonna enjoyed tackling home projects, playing cards with Bill and friends, religiously watching re-runs of “Columbo,” walking through her neighborhood, where she forged friendships with virtually everyone, and making occasional trips to the casino with Bill. Lonna was famously known for her unwavering kindness and ability to strike up friendly conversations with anyone. But her favorite pastime was by far simply spending quality time visiting with Bill and all members of her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Jim) Lyons, her son, John (Cassandra) Lewis, and grandchildren, John (Brittney) Lyons, Ana Lyons, Ph.D., Dr. Renae Lyons, Lindy Haskins, Jameson Lewis, and Claire Lewis, great grandchildren Ruby and Delilah Haskins, and Bill’s children, Kellie (Dan) Newton and Veronica (Brent) Pechumer, and numerous of Bill’s beloved family.
